Bloomfield Hills-based Flagstar Bank has signed a three-year
contract to become title sponsor of the Detroit Free Press
International Marathon.
"We are delighted to have Flagstar Bank as our title sponsor for
what has become a marvelous community event for the past 20
years," Free Press publisher Heath J Meriwether said.
The marathon, Oct. 18, will be known officially as the Detroit
Free Press/Flagstar Bank International Marathon Presented by
M-Care.
The 21-year-old marathon is the eighth oldest in the United
States.
"We are excited to be involved in the marathon this year," said
Gary Burkart, assistant vice president and national advertising
manager for Flagstar, which has 22 bank branches in Michigan.
"We hope that this new partnership with the Detroit Free Press
will bring continued support to this great international event and
aid in the fight for a cure for multiple sclerosis."
The Multiple Sclerosis Society is the official affiliated marathon
charity, and an increasing number of runners have collected
pledges for MS over the last few years.
"It's events like these that bring communities together to help
work toward that cure," Burkart said.
Flagstar's sponsorship includes WWJ's live radio coverage of
the marathon.
