Wolverines Compete at Prestigious Cannon Classic

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The majority of the University of Michigan women's track and field team traveled to Indianapolis, Ind., to compete at the Cannon Classic on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 5-6). One Wolverine won an individual title, while several others turned in strong performances.

The competition is one of the most prestigious indoor track andfield meets in the country, featuring teams from across the country. Someof the teams that competed against U-M were: Arizona, Auburn, Ball State,Bowling Green, Florida International, Illinois, Indiana State, Ohio State,Purdue, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas Tech, Tulane, UCLA, UNLV,Wisconsin, Rice, Tulsa, Vanderbilt and Texas, the 1998 defending national champion.

The lone individual victory for the Wolverines was senior standoutNicole Forrester (Cookstown, Ontario/Banting HS), who won the high jump. The three-time All-American defeated defending indoor national champion Erin Aldrich of Texas with a leap of 6 feet, 2 inches, an NCAA automatic qualifying standard. Aldrich tied the collegiate record at the meet last year with a jump of 6 feet, 6 incehs. It marked the first time that Forrester has defeated Aldrich in head-to-head competition.

Other Wolverines who finished in the top 15 included seniorMaria Brown (Kingston, Jamaica/Immaculate Conception) in the 60-meter dash, sophomore All-American Adrienne Hunter (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS)in the 800-meter run, senior Michelle Slater (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams HS) in the mile run, sophomore Katie Clifford (Grand Rapids, Mich./WestCatholic HS) in the 3000-meter run, junior All-American Elizabeth Kampfe(Decatur, Ill./MacArthur HS) in the 5000-meter run, junior Brandi Bentley(Detroit, Mich./Marian HS) in the long jump, freshman Tasha Phillips(Sarasota, Fla./Booker HS) in the triple jump, senior Nicole Keith(Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling HS) in the shot put and junior Julie Presley(Claremont, Calif./Claremont HS) in the 20-pound weight throw.

Up next for a small portion of the Michigan track and field teamis the Colorado Springs Classic in Colorado Springs, Colo., onFriday, Feb. 12. The remainder of the team will be hosting theWolverine Open at the U-M Track Building on Saturday, Feb. 13. Fieldevents will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the running events starting at noon.
