Michigan Wins Two at Meyo, McGregor Makes 1999 Debut

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A portion of the University of Michigan women's track and field team traveled to South Bend, Ind., to compete at the ninth annual Meyo Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 5-6). One Wolverine won an individual title, while the 1600-meter relay team won to remain undefeated on the season.

The Meyo Invitational is one of the premier collegiate indoormeets, with Michigan going against competition from across the U.S. andCanada. The other teams competing against the Wolverines were theUniversity of Alabama, Illinois State University, University of Notre Dameand Western Ontario University.

Senior Katie McGregor (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South), 1998 NCAA Division I national cross country champion and the 1998 3000-meter run indoor national champion, competed for the first time this 1999 indoor season. McGregor, who had been out with a foot injury, ran the3000-meter run Saturday, placing second with a time of 9:37.25. She finished less than two seconds behind winner Kris Ihie, who was competing for NIKE.

The lone individual winner for the Wolverines was freshman NkechiOkwumabua (Plymouth, Mich./Canton HS), who won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 4 1/2 inches. It marked the first win at Michigan for the freshman.

Up next for both the Michigan men's and women's track and field teams is the Colorado Springs Classic in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Friday, Feb. 12.
