Michigan Women Start New Year on Right Foot

    ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind one double-event winner and one NCAAprovisional standard, the University of Michigan women's track and fieldteam began the 1999 season right where it left off in 1998 as U-M won 11 of the 14 events at its Wolverine Invitational.

    The other teams competing against the Maize and Blue in the non-scoring meet were Eastern Michigan, Toledo, Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Detroit and Aquinas.

    Michigan's efforts were led by double-event winner Maria Brown(Kingston, Jamaica/Immaculate Conception HS). The junior won the 60-meter dash (7.50) and the 200-meter dash (25.15). In both events Brown led a 1-2-3 Wolverine sweep. Nicole Forrester (Cookstown, Ontario/Banting HS) won the high jump with a leap of 5-9 3/4, tying the NCAA provisional standard. The senior All-American won the event over Michigan freshman Nicole Denamur (Algoma, Wis./Algoma HS).

    Other Wolverines taking top honors were junior Olive Ikeh(Plymouth, Mich./Canton HS) in the 60-meter high hurdles, sophomore Regine Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./St. Bernard HS) in the 400-meter run, senior Sarah Hamilton (Canton, Mich./Salem HS) in the 600-meter run, sophomore Adrienne Hunter (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) in the 800-meter run, senior Sara Barnard (Ferndale, Mich./Ferndale HS) in the pole vault, freshmanTasha Phillips (Sarasota, Fla.) in the triple jump, junior Brandi Bentley (Detroit, Mich./Marian HS) in the long jump and senior Nicole Keith (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling HS) in the shot put.

    The Wolverines will be taking on stiff competition next week atthe U-M Track Building as they host a quadrangular meet with state rival Michigan State, fellow Big Ten Conference member Indiana and track powerhouse Kansas.
