Wolverines Top the State of Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team came from behind to win the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships on Friday (Jan. 29) at Eastern Michigan University's Bowen Field House. The Wolverines started the meet down 10 points to Central Michigan as the Chippewas gained key points in the field events, but U-M recovered to win handily over the six-team field.

The Wolverines, 1998 defending Michigan Intercollegiate champions rang up 181.5 points to win the meet over second-place Central Michigan (116.5) and host Eastern Michigan (109), who finished third. Also competing were Western Michigan (4th, 34.5), Michigan State (5th, 27) and Detroit (6th, 25.5).

The running competition started with the Katie Clifford (GrandRapids, Mich./West Catholic HS), Heather Burcar (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS), Erica Murdock (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights HS) and Erin White (Battle Creek, Mich./Central HS) teaming up to win the distance medley relay for the Wolverines in 12:02.41.

Senior Maria Brown (Kingston, Jamaica/Immaculate Conception) was the only multiple event winner for Michigan as she swept the 60-meter dash (7.74) and 200-meter dash (24.43).

Junior All-American Lisa Ouellet (Sudbury, Ontario/Lasalle Secondary) was victorious in the mile run as she won the race from the first heat, finishing just three tenths of a second ahead of Eastern Michigan's Carrie Gould. Junior Brandi Bentley (Detroit, Mich./Marian HS) jumped to victory in the long jump with a distanceof 19 feet, 5 1/4 inches. Bentley tied the meet record and scored valuable points for the Wolverines as Michigan finally assumed the lead over CMU.

The highlight of the night for the Maize and Blue harriers was the800-meter run as Michigan claimed the top two spots. SophomoreAll-American Adrienne Hunter (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) and senior All-American Sarah Hamilton (Canton, Mich./Salem HS) finished first and second with times of 2:11.14 and 2:11.37, respectively.

Senior Nicole Keith (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling HS) successfullydefended her 1998 shot put title with a winning heave of 48 feet, 4 inches, achieving a personal best by almost a foot.

Michigan ended the meet with its second relay win on the night as Ouellet, Hamilton, Hunter and Olive Ikeh (Plymouth, Mich./Canton HS) won the 1600-meter relay with a time of 3:52.96.

Up next for the Wolverines is the Cannon Classic on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 5-6 in Indianapolis, Ind. It will be the first time thisseason that U-M is traveling outside Washtenaw County. Friday's competition will consist of the distance medley relay and the prelims of the sprint events, while Saturday's events consist of the finals of the sprints along with the remainder of the running events and all the field events.
