ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and fieldteam had several solid performances at its Wolverine Invitational to start the 1999 season. Michigan is boasting a young squad this season, so for many Wolverines it was their first meet in the Maize and Blue uniform.

Other teams competing against the Maize and Blue in the non-scoring meet were Eastern Michigan, Toledo, Western Michigan, Central Michigan and Aquinas.

Michigan was led by junior Steve Moffat (Villa ParkCalif./Villa Park HS) and junior All-American Jay Cantin (Iron River, Mich./West Iron County HS), the Wolverines' only individual winners. Moffat won the 600-meter run (1:21.55) while Cantin came away with a victory in the 800-meter run (1:55.90).

Michigan's day was capped off with a victory in the 1600-meter relay (3:21.99) as the Wolverines were able to outdistance Eastern Michigan.

The Wolverines will be taking on stiff competition next week atthe U-M Track Building as they host a quadrangular meet with state rival Michigan State, fellow Big Ten Conference member Indiana and track powerhouse Kansas. The field events start at 9:30 and the running events at noon.
