Wolverines Fall to Indiana in Michigan Quadrangular
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and fieldteam received strong performances from two freshmen but came up just short at the Michigan Quadrangular, falling five and a half points short of the winning team score at the U-M Track Building Saturday (Jan. 16). Indiana University won the four-team meet with 150 points, squeaking past Michigan (144.5) and the University of Kansas (133.5). Michigan State University ended up fourth with 87 points.
Freshman Ike Okenwa (San Diego, Calif./Morse HS) ran away with a victory in the 200-meter dash (21.94), outdistancing Tywanne Aldridge ofKansas, who finished second. Okenwa added a second-place finish in the 60-meter dash (6.93).
Fellow freshman Oded Padan (Tel Aviv, Israel/Alliance HS) showed why he was the top high school triple jump recruit in the country last year by winning with a leap of 51 feet, 8 1/2 inches, an NCAA provisional standard. Padan was the runnerup in the long jump with a mark of 23 feet, 9 inches.
Michigan's 1600-meter relay also was victorious, in a time of 3:19.51.
The Wolverines will compete in Ann Arbor for the third straight week when they host the Red Simmons Invitational next Saturday (Jan. 23). The field events will start at 9:30 a.m., with the running events beginning at noon.
