Join three-time Olympic Gold medalist Peter Snell, former world record holder Herb Lindsay, and Olympic Gold medalist in swimming, Sheila Taormina, for a weekend of run and walk races and a new alternative health expo on Saturday, April 10, and Sunday, April 11 at Domino's Farms in Ann Arbor. Sponsored by the University of Michigan Health System and Heart Care Program, in cooperation with Domino's Pizza, Inc., the First Annual U-M Heart Care Health Assessment and Alternative Medicine Expo will feature Snell, Lindsay, Taormina and 11 other nationally known speakers and 47 exhibitors in such areas as nutrition, sports medicine, acupuncture, massage and homeopathy. The expo is hosted in partnership with the new U-M Complementary and Alternative Medicine Research Center (CAMRC). Admission and parking is free. Hours are 10 am to 7 pm Saturday and 8 am to 1 pm Sunday. The race events, which take place on Sunday, April 11, include: Domino's Distance Classic 20k run, 9 am; U-M Heart Care Program Healthy Heart 5k run and walk, 9:05 am; and the U-M Heart Care Mitral Mile run, walk and racewalk, 8:30 am. All courses take place at Domino's Farms. The races--which replace the recently discontinued Briarwood Runs--benefit Easter Seals Society and the clinical care, research and educational activities of the U-M Mitral Valve Clinic. Snell, a native of New Zealand, is a three-time Olympic gold medalist in the 800m and 1500m runs. He has also set world records at 800m and the mile. He is considered to have been the best 800 meter runner ever and was selected Track and Field Athlete of the Decade for the 1960's. Today, Snell is a research scientist in exercise physiology in the department of Internal Medicine (Cardiology) and director of the Human Performance Laboratory at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. His main focus is on understanding how the body adapts to exercise training and the relevance of this process for both athletic performance and health, particularly for the prevention of heart disease. At the expo, he will present "Self-hypnotism: Behavior Modification for Athletic Excellence." Lindsay, who is a former world record holder in the 10 mile and 20k road runs, now teaches and coaches at Fremont High School. He was twice voted "Road Runner of the Year" by Runner's World. His lecture is entitled, "Ecopsychology" Taormina, Atlanta Gold medalist in freestyle swimming, is a professional motivational speaker and triathlete. Her talk is called "More than Gold: Get to know an Olympic Athlete, and then you'll realize you can be one too!"
