AUGUST 7th, 1999
London, England -- British Grand Prix
Here is Kevin Sullivan's first hand account
of the British Grand Prix race:
There is not a whole lot to report from my end of the race since I only made
it about 180m.
I got out well and was sitting in the middle of the pack on the outside of
lane one when William Tanui moved out in front of me. I put my hand out to
make sure I had enough room so that I would not run up his back and at the
same time, someone from behind me clipped my heels, my legs got tangled up
and down I went.
I briefly considered getting back up and getting back into the race but with
the leaders running 1:51 through 800m it would have been near impossible to
catch the pack after I got up. So for the first time in my running career
(13 years) I failed to finish a race. I guess there is a first for
everything. What was really dissapointing was that 8th place was 3:54 which
would have been some relatively easy points to pick up to try to make the
Grand Prix final. As it sits now however, I have dropped to 10th in the
Grand Prix standings and the top 8 qualify for the final.
On the plus side, I should be well rested for Zurich although I may be in the
B heat (the meet director was waiting until after this meet to decide on who
was in the A race).
As for the race, El Guerrouj was 1:51 at 800m, 2:50 at 1200m and finished up
in a very respectable 3:47.10.
I am off to Zurich tomorrow and will compete on Wednesday.
