AUGUST 3rd, 1999
MAI Galan, Malmo, Sweeden --
Here is Kevin Sullivan's first hand account
of the 1500 Meter race:
I feel like I had solid effort, but was just feeling flat in this race. The
rabbits were supposed to be anywhere from 1:51-1:54 at 800m, but when none of
the Kenyans who were being rabbited went with the rabbit he slowed to 1:57.
This set the race up for a classic sit and kick affair.
At 1:57, the pace was slow enough that the entire field was tightly bunched
and it got very rough from 600m to go, until 200m to go. I was sitting
anywhere from 3rd to 8th during the race.
The pace started to pick up at 1200m mark and heading into the turn I was in about
8th place with a wall of guys from lane one to three right in front of me.
They started jostling for position and trying to push each other farther to
the outside and in the process a gap opened up along the rail. I moved past
the wall and into 4th place.
With 150m to go I had moved into 3rd and was running down 2nd, but the leader
was to quick on this day and I couldn't make any inroads on him. I was
a little upset with the result, since I had beaten him just 2 weeks ago in
Casablanca but it was a good tune up for London on August 7th.
