A RunMichigan chat with Karen Harvey

RunMichigan: How did you feel at the start?
Karen: Actually I was laughing before the start of the race. It was so windy and there was only one other person in the race so I was not feeling very serious. Otherwise my legs felt good and my warm-up was normal.

RunMichigan: Did you plan on setting a new record from the beginning of the race?
Karen: No, I did not think I could do it against the wind and alone.

RunMichigan: Did you have to run most of the race by yourself?
Karen: Yes

RunMichigan: What is the current status on the Women's 3000 Meter Steeplechase becoming a World Championship Event and Olympic Event?
Karen: Unfortunately the rumors are that the 3000mSC will not be an event at the 2001 World Championships. From what I here the IAAF has slated it to be a world championship event at 2003. I will know for sure in November. If that is the case than this was probably my last steeple of my career. I will not continue to put myself in a stituation where I could get injured and I will not continue to compete in a event that is not being taken seriously.

RunMichigan: What other races do you have planned for end of summer/early fall?
Karen: I am running a road mile in Rockford, IL this weekend and plan on running the Crim 10 miler ( August 28th). Then I will take a break and my fall schedule is pretty much undecided right now.

RunMichigan: What are you running plans for the 2000 season?
Karen: I am waiting on the decision of the IAAF on the steeple before I decide what my focus could be for 2000.
