Harvey wins Golden Mile

JULY 10TH, 1999

GOLDEN MILE, Traverse City, Michigan

Ann Arbor's Karen Harvey, under perfect conditions (sunny, 70 degrees, no wind), win's the Women's Golden Mile in Traverse City on Saturday July 10th. Harvey's time of 4:32 tied the course record.

RunMichigan.com interview with Karen Harvey:

RunMichigan - How did you feel for the race?

Karen - I felt a lot better in the Golden mile then the Firecracker by far. I felt so flat and tired in Clawson. I really think that the double (5000m/steeple) I did at Canadians the week before was still affecting me. My coach and I also did some speed workouts this week that went really well.

RunMichigan - Were you challenged in the race?

Karen - Yes, the whole race was a challenge, physically, as well as mentally. I mean, this was the best mile field ever assembled at the Cherry Festival. And after losing to Katie less than a week before and having her take my course record at Firecarcker, I really doubted myself and my ability to beat her. She ran really strong there.

The race went like this: at 400m there were three of us wide, Katie, myself, and Theresa at 65 seconds. At 800m Katie and I were really separating ourselves from everyone at 2:14. Then at 800m I realized "hey I feel really good" and something just told me to go. So I surged and by 1000m had a second gap on Katie. By 1200m at 3:25 I had 2 seconds. And at 1200m I surged again, hard, because I knew she would come for me. But she did not and I ran away with.

RunMichigan - Katie McGregor just beat you at the FireCracker Mile on July 5th, were you excited to race her again at the Golden Mile?

Karen - I am always excited, and will always be excited to run against Katie because she is an awesome competitor and a good person. I am hoping we can conitnue to bring out the best in each other.

RunMichigan - Where does the 4:32 mile rank with your best mile times?

Karen - This was my fastest mile ever, old PR 4:34 at Cherry Fest in 1997. 4:32 also tied the course record.

RunMichigan - What other races do you have planned for this summer?

Karen - I know for sure I will run a 3000m steeple at the OTFA (Ontario) Championships in Sanria on August 8th. And after that I am considering a few more road races, but I am not sure on anything right now.
