CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FRIDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1999

MEN S AND WOMEN S CROSS COUNTRY

NOTRE DAME, IN - The nationally-ranked Calvin cross country teams posted a
pair of solid performances at the prestigious Notre Dame Invitational Friday
afternoon as the Calvin women placed seventh in a field of 21 teams with  259
points while the Calvin men finished 18th in a field of 23 teams with 387
points.

Ranked number-one in for the third consecutive week in the NCAA Division III
women's cross country poll, Calvin finished as the top small school in the
women's competition, finishing ahead of Division I Eastern Michigan, Western
Michigan, Clemson, Ohio State, Bradley, Kentucky and Wisconsin-Green Bay as
well as nationally-ranked Malone (ranked 2nd) of the NAIA and
nationally-ranked Division II Hillsdale (ranked 8th); Edinboro (ranked fourth)
and Southern Indiana (ranked sixth).  Ranked 14th in the Division I women's
cross country poll, host Notre Dame won the women's race with 57 points while
13th ranked Missouri finished second with 73 points.

Calvin was led by senior Amy Mizzone (Wayne, NJ) as she placed 29th with a
time of 18:14.  Calvin senior Lisa Timmer (Ann Arbor) and sophomore Erinn Boot
(Kalamazoo Christian) were next, placing 41st and 42nd respectively with times
of 18:24 respectively.  Boot's time was a career-best.  Senior Liz Kuipers
(Sarnia, ON) was Calvin's fourth runner, placing 56th in 18:36 while sophomore
Lindsay Carrier (Tri-Unity Christian) was 91st (19:12); senior April DeKorte
(Grand Rapids Christian) 103rd (19:24) and sophomore Laura Medema (Grand
Rapids Christian) 127th (20:33) to round out Calvin's top-seven.  Joanna
Dieter of Notre Dame took first place individually with a time of 16:52. 
Calvin was the only Division III school competing in the women's race.

On the men's side, ninth-ranked Calvin had a strong showing in a rugged field
of 23 teams.  The University of Michigan, ranked 13th nationally in the latest
Division I poll finished tied for first place with 12th-ranked Georgetown
University with 81 points while host Notre Dame was third with 86 points. 
Calvin finished sixth out of nine small college teams (NAIA, NCAA II and NCAA
III) competing in the men's race with fifth-ranked Malone (NAIA) taking eighth
with 266 points; number-one ranked North Central (NCAA III) finishing 11th
with 325 points; 16th-ranked Lewis (NCAA II) finishing 12th with 352 points
and sixthth ranked-Heidelberg (NCAA III) 17th with 382 points.  Calvin
finished ahead of second-ranked Wisconsin-Steven's Point (NCAA III) which was
20th with 515 points and 11th ranked Siena Heights (NAIA) which was 21st (555
points).  

Also a member of the Great Lakes Region, Heidelberg slipped ahead of Calvin
by placing its three, four and five runners inside of Calvin's fourth and
fifth man.  Calvin's top finisher was junior Dan Hoekstra (Kalamazoo
Christian) who finished 37th with a season-best time of 24:55.  Junior Paul
Petersen (Crawfordsville, IN) was Calvin's next finisher as he came in 64th
with a time of 25:15.  Sophomores Justin Momany-Pfruender (Midland) and Joel
Klooster (Chatham, ON) followed for the Knights in close order as
Momany-Pfruender was 81st (25:25) and Klooster 83rd (25:28).  Freshman Mike
Richardson (Godwin Heights) was Calvin's fifth man, placing 122nd with a
career-best time of 26:09.  Sophomores Greg Workman (Chattanooga, TN) and
Peter Armstrong (Lacey, WA) completed Calvin's group of finishers as Workman
was 144th (26:47) and Armstrong 146th (27:00).  

Notre Dame junior Ryan Shay of Central Lake, Michigan, captured first place
honors with a time of 23:52, nipping Jay Cantin of Michigan who was second in
23:54.
