Chicago (July 18, 2002)… The inaugural Harbor LightsTriathlon is scheduled to take place Sunday, August 4th in Waukegan and will be highlighted by a free catered picnic lunch for all participants after the race – a unique luxury at competitive events.
The race marks the first time the city of Waukegan has ever hosted a triathlon.
"Waukegan is looking forward to hosting the inaugural Harbor Lights Triathlon", said Waukegan Mayor Richard Hyde. "This event offers us an excellent opportunity to highlight what our community is doing to revitalize our lakefront and our downtown areas to a new audience of fitness enthusiasts. Additionally, we are hoping that the Harbor Lights Triathlon will grow into one of Waukegan's premiere activities that we can add to our already outstanding schedule of special events."
The Harbor Lights Triathlon is a coed sprint distance race in a spectacular flat and fast setting in Waukegan. Participants will swim in a contained harbor on Lake Michigan, bike on a four-lane expressway closed to vehicular traffic just for the race and run along the lakefront on scenic Sheridan Road. Hosted by the City of Waukegan, the Harbor Lights race site is just forty minutes north of downtown Chicago and within easy reach of triathletes from southeast Wisconsin, Chicago, its surrounding communities and southwest Indiana.
Falling just three weeks before the Mrs. T’s Triathlon, the Harbor Lights Triathlon will serve as a great warm up for the longer race and as an added bonus, also offers 100 qualifying spots to the later race. Those spots will be awarded to participants in Harbor Lights by a random draw to be held after the Harbor Lights Awards Ceremony.
The Harbor Lights Triathlon will benefit the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which was started by actor Danny Thomas and is recognized worldwide for its charitable work in pediatrics and research. Since 1962 St. Jude’s has treated more than 18,000 children, most with catastrophic illness, from the U.S. and 60 foreign counties while also providing support for the kids’ families.
Information, including online registration, volunteer opportunities and downloadable applications for the Harbor Lights Triathlon is available at www.CapriEvents.com. Additionally, athletes may sign up at the Race’s Expo on Saturday, August 3 at the Grand Pavillion Park at the beach in Waukegan. Family, friends and spectators will also be able to enjoy the catered Harbor Lights picnic on race day for a $7.00 fee.
