Notre Dame Men's Track & Field Completes Alex Wilson Invitational
March
2, 2002
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- (3-2-02) The University of Notre Dame track and field
team concluded competition in the 2002 Alex Wilson Invitational on Saturday
in the Loftus Sports Center. The meet, which does not feature team scoring,
featured athletes representing 77 schools from across the country as well as
many accomplished non-collegiate competitors.
The men's portion of the meet was highlighted by the one-mile run. The
race featured many of the nation's top milers and produced five runners that
posted provisional qualifying times for the NCAA Championship meet. The
race was won by Notre Dame senior Luke Watson. Watson's time of 4:01.16,
which provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA Championships, topped his
previous career best by more than nine seconds. The time was also the
eighth-fastest mile by a collegiate runner this year. Watson has also posted
the second fastest 3,000-meter time in the country this year.
Other highlights from Saturday included freshman Dwight Ellick, who
placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.61 seconds, a new
personal best. Quill Redwine also took second-place honors, finishing the
high jump with a height of 2.00 meters (6' 6.75"). Freshman Selim Nurudeen
finished in third place in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 7.95 seconds,
one-tenth of a second faster than his previous best.
Watson joined Friday night's NCAA Championship provisional qualifier
Todd Mobley, who posted a provisional time in the 5,000 meter run.
The Alex Wilson Invitational was the last regular-season indoor meet
for Notre Dame and was one of the best 'last chance meets' in the nation, as
teams and individual runners from around the country took one last shot at
making the field at the NCAA Championships, to be held next weekend (March 8
& 9) in Fayetteville, Ark. Automatic qualifiers are assured of a spot in
the meet, and a meet committee will decide which provisional qualifiers will
compete. A complete listing of the competitors who have qualified for the
NCAA Championship meet both automatically and provisionally, as well as
their best times, is available through www.ncaa.org.
