SILVER VALLEY TRAIL RUNS, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28
The eastern side of the state calls itself the Sunrise Side. It also calls
itself neglected, compared to the attention paid by touirists to the Lake
Michigan side. Lake Huron beaches may lack the grandeur of dunes on the
west shore, but there's nothing lacking about the views or organization
behind these runs in the Huron National Forest, just west of Tawas. The
trails are groomed, and while hilly enough, fairly modest by trail
standards. The views are gorgeous, particularly if the color season has
gotten early start. Race is followed by a generous raffle, and hotel-room
prices are modest compared to their west-side brethren. Call (800)
55-TAWAS.

BRING ID'S TO WHOLE FOODS MARKET HEALTH AND FITNESS EXPO
If you are planning to run the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon,
you need to pick-up your packet at the Whole Foods Market Health and
Fitness Expo. There is no race-day packet pick-up for these events. Also,
marathon officials are advising all marathon, marathon relay and wheeler
entrants to bring photo ID's and proof of citizenship to the Expo. The
Health and Fitness Expo will be in Ontario Hall at the Marriott
Renaissance Center. Hours of operation are from 3 PM to 8 PM on Friday,
October 4 and from 10 AM to 8 PM on Saturday, October 5. The Expo is free
and open to the public and registration will be available through
Saturday. For Expo speakers and other information see
http://www.freep.com/marathon/.
MICHIGAN STATE WOMEN'S XC RANKED 9TH IN DIVISION I
The Michigan State Women's cross country team rose from 12th in the
pre-season poll to 9th as the season got underway. The voting panel
consists of the nine regional representatives of the Women's
Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association plus three at-large
voters.
In the United States Cross Country Coaches men's poll, the Eastern
Michigan Men's Cross Country Team is ranked 12th in Division I. Michigan
State (15th) and Michigan (23rd) are also ranked. Reflecting the season's
loss of Dathan Ritzenhein, Colorado is ranked 3rd behind Stanford and
Arizona.
RED OCTOBER RUN, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5
You don't have to hunt to find Red October. The 12th annual races start
and finish at Oakwood Annapolis Hospital, 33155 Annapolis Ave in Wayne.
Red October begins with a 9:00 am Junior October Run, 9:50 10K, and 5K
run/walk at 10:00 am. Proceeds help pay for child passenger safety
programming at the hospital. Phone 313.586.5486 or visit

PLAN FOR WINTER BLAH'S; RUN/WALK THE CARIBBEAN
Running Fit has just the trip to beat the Winter blahs. Run/Walk the
Caribbean in St. Maarten, February 17-February 23, 2003. The trip includes
optional daily group runs, walks, hikes, and parties, 7 nights at the 4
Star Maho Bay Resort, round trip airfare from Detroit, transportation to
and from the airport to resort and all meals and drinks until 10pm. You'll
want to explore both the Dutch and French sides of this scenic island
where the road winds up and down green hillsides and along the
breathtaking coastline. An entry to the Jammin' 10K is included, too. For
more information, call 248.235.0006 or email [email protected].
