of some of the park's best hills. The 5K starts at 9 and the half-mile
fun run at 8:30. Register online at http://AATrackClub.org. For more

TIME MAGAZINE FEATURES AMBASSADOR BRIDGE & BEN ANDERSON
That the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon course will include the
Ambassador Bridge, the Windsor waterfront and the Detroit-Windsor tunnel
is a tribute to the leadership and perseverance of race director Pat Ball
and many other people. To truly appreciate the magnitude of the return to
the international course, check out Time magazine's September 11, 2002
issue. The article profiles the Ambassador Bridge's Chief Inspector for
Commercial Operations, Ben Anderson, and his complex task of balancing the
needs of security and commerce at the busy border.

BAKER BATTLES LEADER FOR USA 20K, FINISHES 2ND
NEW HAVEN (02-Sep) -- Dan Browne defended his USA 20-K title at the 25th
running of this New England Labor Day racing staple, but he had a much
harder time doing so this year. Unlike 2001, when he powered away from
David Morris in the final miles, this time Browne had to battle Kyle Baker
right to the tape before assuming the crown.
"This was the hardest race I've ever run," said Browne, in the midst of
120 mile per week training for his marathon debut at Twin Cities. "Give
Kyle a lot of credit - he pushed me right to the line."
Baker, third at Bix in July and the top American at the Crim 10 Mile
last week, broke apart a pack of two dozen of America's best distance men
with a 4:32 sixth mile, then dueled with Browne the rest of the way to
keep the outcome in doubt until the final stride. The pair exchanged the
lead no less than seven times in the last two miles, with neither able to
establish a decisive margin. The intensity of their battle showed in the
splits; the first half was run in 30:03, the second, over a more difficult
part of the course, was 29:19. Browne's time of 59:21 was just eight
seconds off Paul Cummings' American record, set en route at the New
Bedford Half-Marathon in 1987.
Story and results by Jim Gerweck for Race Results Weekly

4. Clint Verran, Rochester, MI 1:00:58 $1250
NO CROSS COUNTRY SEASON FOR RITZ
BOULDER, COLORADO (9/3/02)--A bone scan taken Sunday revealed that
Colorado All-American cross country runner Dathan Ritzenhein has suffered
a stress fracture in his right femur and will likely redshirt what would
have been his sophomore season.
Ritzenhein began treatment for an iliotibial (IT) band injury in
August, and had only started running last Tuesday when he started
complaining of muscle tightness. He was re-evaluated by CU's sports
medicine staff on Friday, was held out of Saturday's Open/Alumni/Time
Trial as a precaution and a bone scan taken Sunday confirmed the stress
fracture.
A typical femur stress fracture, because it's a weight-bearing bone,
takes eight weeks to heal, but recovery is on a case-by-case basis. He
should be on crutches for two weeks and will cross train with isometric
exercises and in the training room's swim-ex while his teammates are
practicing, and will resume workouts in late October. He is anticipated
to compete during both the indoor and outdoor track seasons.
"Our goal every year is to win a national title. That goal is harder
now," explained [Coach Mark] Wetmore. "But as Dathan himself said, we
still have the top three runners in the country (Jorge and Ed Torres and
Steve Slattery. So from the rest of the team, we need two to rise up."
