MICHIGAN RUNNER TV PRESENTS CRIM 2002
For the first time, Michigan Runner TV presents the Crim Festival of Races. Our cameras may have captured you at the 10 Mile, 8K, 5K or 1 Mile starts, during the Crim Running Clubs parade, or celebrating at the Flint-Journal post race party. We interview race founder Bobby Crim, the Crim's first race director Lois Craig, marathon world record holder Catherine Ndereba, Kyle Baker, first US finisher and race director Sherlynn Everly. http://michiganrunner.tv
CRIM'S SPECIAL FOR INTERNATIONAL, STATE AND LOCAL RUNNERS
Thank-you, Flint, Michigan. Almost every city and town has a festival, many of which feature a festival road race. Flint, Michigan is the only city of which I know in which road races * are * the festival.
. We congratulate Sherlyn Everly, Anne and John Gault, Jerry Preston, Mark Bauman, the Riverbend Striders and thousands of Flint residents who make the Crim such a special event.
. We watched WFUM's annual telecast of the Crim during which WFUM's Jim Gaver and Michigan Runner's Scott Hubbard give everybody a chance to see the race up-front develop.
. We delighted in Flint's love affair with six-time Crim winner Catherine Ndereba and Jim Gaver's analogy that seeing Ndereba run Flint roads last week was like seeing Tiger Woods tee it up outside your front door.
. We salute Michiganders Kyle Baker (first US, 7th overall), Laurie Decker (3rd master), Phil Bedford (3rd master), and Betsey Frens (open top 10). Former Michigander Cindy Keeler returned to take the 2nd master's spot.
. We enjoyed the opportunity to meet Crim '92 winner and '99 masters winner Simon Kaori.
. Most of all, we enjoyed talking with race founder Bobby Crim, who finished the 10 Mile in 1:31:30 for 5th in his 70-74 age group.
Jimbo Boyd returned to Michigan to wheel the 10 Mile (Wheeling up those hills is not an easy task.)
. We enjoyed the Crim Running Clubs kid who ran, not to the finish line, but toward us, until his nose was within an inch of our camera lens, stopped and grinned while we recorded his image.
. We're already looking forward to next year. See you at the 27th running of the Crim Festival of Races, August 23, 2003.
THE DURANGO MARATHON, OCTOBER 13, 2002
With the backdrop of the San Juan Mountains; Durango, CO will host the inaugural Durango Marathon Sunday, October 13, 2002. The course will start at Fort Lewis College and end on historic Main Street in downtown Durango, CO. You'll wind your way through the Animas Valley surrounded by mountain views and red cliffs - this is the same valley where the 1969 classic Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was filmed. Unmatched for beauty, you'll agree that Durango is truly a runner's paradise. There will be 17 aid stations located along the course serving water and Accelerade. The aid stations at miles 14, 17 and 20 will also have CarbBoom energy gel - the Official Energy Gel for the Durango Marathon. The celebration will last all weekend; there will be a Marathon Expo, pasta dinner, group trail runs and hikes, a 2 person marathon relay, a 5K, a kid's fun run and post-marathon block party.
BAKER'S MARATHON DEBUT WILL BE LASALLE BANK CHICAGO
Kyle Baker talked about his fall plans after the Crim 10 Mile on Saturday. Labor Day will take Baker to Connecticut for the New Haven 20K Road Race-this year's 20K championship. Since New Haven, Connecticut is the home of Yale University, we think the odds are good that Baker, an RRCA 2002 Road Scholar, will bring home an A. After that, Baker plans to run his first marathon at the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon on October 13.
KING JORDAN: ULTRA RUNNER AND UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT
With Labor Day upon us, school days are upon us, too and we are reminded of an interview with King Jordan which we read in the July/August Ultra Runner. Dr. Jordan has been the president of Gallaudet University since 1988. Gallaudet is the college for the deaf and hard of hearing in Washington and Dr. Jordan is Gallaudet's first deaf president. Jordan talks with interviewer Don Allison about the challenges of balancing his ultra-running (the 100-mile Grand Slam, 60 marathons in 60 months) with the demands of life as a university president. How does he do it? "The only requirement is the willingness to get up early," says Jordan.
