WINDSOR, BRIDGE AND TUNNEL ARE BACK FOR 25TH MARATHON
We are as excited as Detroit Free Press Publisher, Heath Meriwether, who
announced the course for the 25th Detroit Free Press Flagstar Bank
Marathon at a press conference hosted by Greektown Casino on Monday. The
course will again incorporate the Ambassador Bridge, the Windsor
waterfront and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. The route, designed by Doug
Kurtis, continues around Belle Isle, through historic Indian Village, and
by Greektown with a finish at Ford Field, the new home of the Detroit
Lions. After the traditional international route was nixed following the
events of 9/11 last year, race and city officials doubted that the
international route could happen again. That it did, is a credit to the
determination and perseverance of Race Director Pat Ball and the support
of customs, city and federal officials. Mayor Michael D. Hurst of Windsor
and Derek Miller, representing Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, both saw
the marathon as a symbol of the free and open borders between Windsor and
Canada. In further good news, the Immigration and Naturalization Service
will have a booth at the Marathon Expo to allow runners to register until
the day before the October 6 race.
ST. IGNACE FITNESS EXPO, AUGUST 17-18
You won't want to miss this weekend's events at the annual St. Ignace
Fitness Expo. Start off Saturday with either the 5K run, the 10K run or a
5K walk along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Events begin at 8:30 am at the
Father Marquette Memorial. Then, Saturday night, treat yourself to
spectacular views of the Mackinac Bridge on the Mighty Mac Boat Cruise
aboard a Star Line ferry beginning at 7:30 pm. Finally, top it all off on
Sunday with the Mighty Mac Scenic Bike Tour beginning at 6:00 am. The tour
is a ride, not a race, and includes crossing the Mackinac Bridge plus
20,40 and 50 mile tour routes. For lodging and more information see
http://www.stignace.com or 800-338-6660.
JORDAN DESILETES' STEEPLECHASE MARK IS GOLDEN
Eastern Michigan University steeplechaser Jordan Desilets won the 3000
meter steeplechase in 8:52.10 at the PowerAde North America, Central
America & Caribbean (NACAC) Under-25 Track & Field Championships in San
Antonio last weekend. In the 10,000 meter event, Brian Sell's 30:16.29 was
just .03 off the winning time of 30:16.26.
WISNIEWSKI WINS HALF MARATHON GOLD
We were not surprised when University of Michigan All-American Mike
Wisniewski was named to the U.S. NACAC team. We were just a little
surprised to see that Mike would be running the half-marathon, since the
13.1 mile half marathon is a tad longer than the usual 10K event in which
college athletes compete. Smart move: no one else in the under-25K event
tackled the half marathon and Wisniewski had the difficult course, the
gold medal, and a terrific time of 1:10:05 to himself.
WORLD RECORD HOLDER CATHERINE NDEREBA TO SPEAK AT CRIM
Catherine Ndereba is not only returning to the Crim Festival of Races next
week to defend her 10 mile title, but she also will be sharing her wisdom
and insight at several speaking engagements. The marathon world record
holder (2:18:47) will speak at the New Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist
Church on Wednesday, August 21 from 6-8:00 pm. The Church is at 1035 East
Carpenter Road, Flint (corner of Saginaw Street and Carpenter Road). Her
second engagement will be at the Crim Running Clinic at the Riverfront
Character Inn during the Crim Sports and Fitness Expo, Friday, August 23,
3:30 pm. Finally, you can meet Catherine and all the Crim elite athletes
at the International Institute's International Festival at 6:00 pm on
Saturday, August 24 after the race. The Institute is at 515 Stevens
Street, Flint and will be showing WFUM's same-day broadcast of the Crim 10
Mile race.
FORMER CADILLAC, U-M RUNNER EGGLE KILLED
The Arizona Republic has reported that Kris Eggle, a grad of Cadillac High
and the University of Michigan, was killed in a shootout with two
fugitives just north of the Mexican border at Organ Pipe National Monument
in Arizona. Eggle was valedictorian and also a 9:30 two-miler at Cadillac.
He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1995 and joined the
National Park Service. He would have turned 29 on August 25.
