RRCA ANNOUNCES KYLE BAKER AS 2002 ROADS SCHOLAR®
Alexandria, VA---The Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) is pleased to
announce the 2002 RRCA Roads Scholar® award recipients: Chris Graff of
Palo Alto, CA; Kyle Baker of Mason, MI; Amy Yoder Begley of Kendallville,
IN; Tara Chaplin of Tucson, AZ; Jeanne Hennessy of Mahopac, NY; and Nicole
Jefferson of Arvada, CO.
Each of this year's six recipients will receive a $4,000 grant from
the RRCA. These grants are intended to financially assist top American
post-collegiate runners who show potential for national and international
ranking. The program underscores the RRCA's 44-year-old commitment to the
development of distance running in America.
Kyle Baker, 26, is a four-time Big Ten Track Champion and three-time
NCAA All-American. A graduate of Michigan State University, Kyle has
continued to work at the school while training under his college coach Jim
Stintzi. Last August, Kyle was the top American finisher in the Crim 10
Mile Run, finishing 11th overall with a time of 49:10. His performances in
2001 earned him the title of Michigan Runner of the Year. Recently, Kyle
finished 10th at the USA 25K Championships (1:17.57) and 20th at the USA
10K Championships (23:32). He is working to make the transition to longer
road races while further lowering his track PRs.
Clint Verran was a 2001 recipient of an RRCA Roads Scholar® award.

BILL'S RUN RICHMOND RUN, SATURDAY, AUGUST 3
"The Richmond 8K has a way of making the road weary warrior feel totally
at home," said Michigan Runner writer Maury Dean. Where else can you
expect a complimentary therapeutic leg massage provided by three massage
services in Richmond, Marine City and Port Huron? The race is run in honor
of William K. Hamilton, whose charity work in Detroit's Cass Corridor is
the stuff of sainthood. The fifth annual 8K run, 5K walk and 1 mile fun
run begins at 8:00 am. Register on-line at http://www.ci.richmond.mi.us or
call (586) 727-7571, ext. 105 for more information.
RUN CLARK LAKE, SATURDAY, AUGUST 3
The 27 year-old 12K is one of Michigan's classic runs. The USATF certified
course follows the perimeter of beautiful Clark Lake, near Jackson, on
gently rolling hills. Cash awards are available for open and masters
division 12K winners. A 5K run, 5K walk and kids runs are available, too.
Races begin at 8:30 am. Run Clark Lake is the sixth of seven eventsw in
the Cit Pat Running Series. Entry forms are available at
http://www.athleticventures.com or call (517) 782-6106.
PHIL MCMULLEN HELPS US DECATHLON TEAM WIN DUAL MEET
Two-time U.S. champion Tom Pappas led Team USA to a convincing victory at
the 2002 USA vs. Germany Decathlon Dual Meet over the weekend at Mt. San
Antonio College in Walnut, California. Pappas' two-day total of 8,431
points blew away the field, which was dominated by American finishers who
took five of the first six spots. 2001 U.S. Championships runner-up Phil
McMullen was fourth with 7,872 points.
Team USA ended Germany's two-year winning streak by easily winning
the competition with 39,908 points, compared with Germany's total of
37,817 points. Team USA holds a 7-3 series lead in the ten-year
event.---From http://usatf.org.
IT'S ALL IN THE NAME: HEART OF THE HILLS
Detroit News columnist Neil Rubin wore the race shirt in the photo
accompanying his column Tuesday morning: 17th Annual Heart of the Hills.
On one of those hot, humid days when we worked up a sweat standing at the
start, the hills presented a challenge. The course, however, gets my vote
as one of the most scenic in Michigan. Lakes, unexpected country lanes in
the "heart" of Bloomfield Hills, and neighborhoods which keep the
gardeners busy were fun to encounter. The volunteers at every single
intersection were great, too.
CELEBRITY SIGHTINGS CONTINUE AT STANDARD FEDERAL 10K'S
We've noticed Hal Higdon, who ran seven marathons to celebrate his 70th
birthday, Bobby Crim, founder of the Crim Festival of Races, and now Carey
Pinkowski. Pinkowski is Executive Director of the LaSalle Bank Chicago
Marathon, by any standards one of the world's premiere marathons, and
certainly one of my favorites. Pinkowski's 40:09 was 4th in his 40-44
age-group at the Grand Rapids event. We also noticed that Michigan Runner
of the Year 2001 Amy Wing is back on the roads after her spring maternity
leave.
