KEN FERGUSON SETS AMERICAN HS RECORD AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN JAMAICA
Detroit Mumford's Ken Ferguson is bringing home medals and records from last weekend's IAAF World Junior Championships in Kingston, Jamaica. At the exciting closing event on Sunday, in front of 36,000 fans, Ferguson led off the 4 x 400 M men's relay to a 3:03:71 for the gold medal-- just ahead of home team Jamaica's 3:04:06. On Friday, Ferguson's personal best 49:38 won a silver medal in the 400 hurdles, set a new American high school record and, of course, a new state record for the event. The South Carolina-bound Ferguson also qualified for the 100 meter hurdles, winning his qualifying heat, and taking 5th place.in the final. ELLEN'S RACE, SATURDAY, JULY 28
There's nothing like a good community race to get novice racers off to a good start. Ellen's Race in East Lansing is just that-- a flat, fast, certified 5K, which is well-known for its superb organization and community spirit. The 1 Mile Kids Fun Run is free and the post-race party is always a great time. Ellen's Race is the perfect mid-season check of your fitness, too. KUDO'S TO CHERRY FESTIVAL RACE COMMITTEE
The Cherry Festival 15K in Traverse City always presented us with a logistical choice: 1) stay at the finish line downtown to watch the Meijer Golden Mile race and the cherry festival parade and then get back to the car at the starting line 2.5 miles away or 2) take the shuttle bus back to the start line and miss the Golden mile and the parade. This year the race committee provided a misting shower at the finish line and transported bags to the finish line. Congratulations to race director Bob Reed and the race committee for the perfect finishing touch to a great event.

DOUBLE THE TROUBLE; DOUBLE THE FUN
Several Michigan Runner magazine subscribers have received two copies of the May/June and July/August issues. The problem was caused by duplicate mailing labels at our printer. If you received double issues, don't worry; you are not being charged and your subscription won't end early. You can just pass on the extra issue to another reader. We've changed the procedure so it shouldn't happen again. Thank-you everyone who called, wrote or sent us email about the problem.
