STANDARD FEDERAL BANK 10K SERIES ? GRAND RAPIDS, JULY 20
The second 10K in Michigan?s new Standard Federal Bank 10K Series will be held in Grand Rapids, Saturday, July 20. Author Hal Higdon and Michigan?s former speaker of the house Bobby Crim were among the finishers of the first race in Lansing last month. Higdon, well-known for his marathon training programs, is providing a 10K training schedule for the Standard Federal Bank 10K Series. If you are thinking about moving up from the 5K to the 10K, you have time to check out Higdon?s training plan on-line before the Kalamazoo 10K on August 17 or the Auburn Hills 10K on September 14. http://www.standardfederalbank10K.com.
FIRE UP! - STEVE?S RUN, SATURDAY, JULY 27, DOWAGIAC
Ron Gunn is one of those bigger-than-life guys who has inspiried the students of Southwest Michigan College and the community of Dowagiac to lace up their running shoes. Ron and Southwest Michigan College support local races throughout the year, but the marquis race ? Steve?s Run Original Road and Trail Race ? is worthy of the trip to Dowagiac in Southwest Michigan. Steve?s Run had music way before the Rock and Roll Marathon came along. Boom boxes supply the tunes which are guaranteed to speed you up, make you laugh or catch a runner?s high. The play list will be in your race packet. If you run the 10K, the course includes Dowagiac?s main street, Southwest Michigan College?s famous cross-country trails, complete with hay bales to jump over, a golf course (with golfers interrupting their games until the runners pass), and a cemetery. ?Fire-Up? will be one of many Burma-Shave-style signs that will greet you along the course. http://www.smc.cc.mi.us/fireup/stevesrun/
JULY AUGUST MICHIGAN RUNNER
Have you ever known a toddler or been lucky enough to be the parent of one? If so, you?ll enjoy Scott Sullivan?s ?Editor?s Notes? in the July/August 2002 ?Michigan Runner? magazine as Scott takes his toddler to a track meet. In the same issue, Robin Sarris Hallop writes about how she has changed her training to remain competitive at the master?s level. Also in the July/ugust issue, ?Michigan Runner? welcomes Doug Kurtis to our pages in addition to columnists Bob Schwartz, Scott Hubbard and Tom Henderson. Michigan Runner is available at specialty running stores throughout Michigan or by subscription. http://michiganrunner.net.
RUNNING IN TRAVERSE CITY
?Michigan Runner? publisher Art McCafferty and I are on our annual stay at Chateau Chantal Winery/B&B on Old Mission Peninsula near Traverse City. We begin the week with the National Cherry Festival 15K with its steep ascent up McKinley Road?known as Mount McKinley to Michigan runners. Not far from the finish line, we watch the invited sub-4-minute milers in the Meijer Golden Mile (Kyle Baker won again this year) and the National Cherry Festival Parade. The week is part vacation and part college teaching, but we always have extra time to get in several more runs up and down the cherry orchards and vineyards and along both East and West Grand Traverse Bays. Legs accustomed to the not-very-steep hills of Southeast Michigan get plenty of hill workouts on the peninsula. We stop by the Running Fit store in TC to talk to Jeff Gaft and find out what?s happening with the local running scene. Jeff and and assistant Sarah Golden say we should keep an eye on two Traverse City Central High School runners. Cassidy Edwards and Claire Otwell are pushing each other to good times. Cassidy beat Claire by a lean at the high school Golden Mile Saturday. http://www.chateauchantal.com
JAMI GRANT SET TO RUN BOSTON AGAIN
If you like dining with a view, some of Northwest Lower Michigan?s best spots are at golf courses. One of my favorites is A-Ga-Ming Golf Course which has a great deck and view of Torch Lake. A-Ga-Ming is on US 31 north of Elk Rapids. A-Ga-Ming staffer Jami Grant of Kewadin is beginning to have success on the roads. Jami?s first marathon (LaSalle Bank Chicago, 2001) was fast enough to qualify for Boston. She finished Boston 2002 in 3:30 and will run again in 2003. Jami ran for Hope College and has plans to lower her Boston time to 3:10. In the meantime, she?ll be in the front of the pack in local road races. Her 1:02:51 in the National Cherry Festival 15K was good for 5th place overall. Good luck with your Boston training, Jami.
