MICHIGAN RUNNING NEWS

June 26, 2002

Great summer races to choose from this weekend:
CHRONICLE SEAWAY RUN, MUSKEGON, SATURDAY, JUNE 29

Outstanding. The 5K and 15K both start and end near the YFCA on Muskegon Lake; the longer run loops past Lake Michigan beaches, over a boardwalk and near silent film star Buster Keaton's old summer home. Stick around for the Summer Celebration parade through downtown Muskegon afterward. See http://www.chroniclevents.com.-- Scott Sullivan.

PICTURED ROCKS RUN FOR SHELTER, MUNISING, JUNE 30

Sponsored by Harbor House, races provide a picturesque and challenging tour of Munising and its outskirts, The 11-miler passes waterfalls, streams and Lake Superior on hilly terrain. The five-mile event is less demanding, but no less scenic. Both start at 8 am from the Alger Centennial Areena. Call (906) 387-5341 or check the website at roadrace.algercounty.com.-Charles Douglas McEwen.

ALAN WEBB'S FUTURE?

Michigan sports writers, coaches and runners have been commenting on Alan Webb's decision to leave college running and sign with sports agent Ray Flynn. Michigan Runner Managing Editor Scott Sullivan says, "I wish Alan well. He's a great young talent who's made a difficult choice. Who among us can understand all the pressure, self-imposed and otherwise, he has been under?

As a Michigan guy, I hate to see Alan leave and, indirectly make a scapegoat of Ron Warhurst for his "disappointing" season. Alan got injured (What teen doesn't think he should be immortal?), tried to hurry back into peak form while taking advice from conflicting coaches. We can all stand to learn about patience, keeping faith in ourselves (and those we have picked to teach us), and holding focus."

For additional comments from Daniel Deyo, Don Richmond, Kevin Ryan, Tom Henderson and Brian Terpek, see the lead story on http://michiganrunner.net. You can also see Alan run at the Wolverine Interregional Cross Country (http://michiganrunner.tv/2001collegexc/) and the Adidas Outdoor Championships (http://michiganrunner.tv/2001aoc/).
