HANSONS DISTANCE NIGHT AT HILLSDALE, THURSDAY (6/6/02)
This Thursday Hansons Running Shop and Hillsdale College will be putting
on a
Distance Night beginning at 8pm. 4 events (800-1500-steeple-5k) men and
women. Last year was a huge success as the women's 800 went sub 2:05 and
the 1500 went sub 4:17. The men's 1500 featured Paul McMullen and the
5000 had 6 athletes go sub 14:00. This is probably the best assembly of
top distance runners in the United States that we are able to witness in
our own state. The event also features a high-school mile. Girls who are
sub 5:40 and boys who are sub 4:40 will receive free entry to this event.
For order of events and more information see

MICHIGAN OWNS THE 10,000 IN NCAA DIVISION I
2001's 10,000 meter champion Ryan Shay (Notre Dame/Central Lake) set out
to defend his title in the hot, humid weather of Baton Rouge at the NCAA
Division I meet, hosted by Louisiana State University last weekend. Shay's
29:02 was good for second place this year, behind Eastern Michigan's Boaz
Cheboiyo's 28:32. Cheboiyo added the 10,000 track title to the cross
country title he won in the Fall season. Jason Hartmann (University of
Oregon/Rockford) was fourth in 29:28. Mike Wisnewski (University of
Michigan/Temperance) won 10th place and All-American honors with 29:47.
Also winning All American honors are Nate Brannen, University of Michigan,
5th, 800 meters, 1:46 (PR), Dathan Ritzenhein (Colorado/Rockford), 5000
meters, Alan Webb (Michigan, South Lakes Virginia) 1500 meters, and Jordon
Desilets, Eastern Michigan, 5th, steeplechase.
In the women's events, Jamie Krzyminski, (Michigan State
University/Corunna) won All American honors with her 7th place finish in
the 10,000 meters (34:55) as did her teammate, Suzy Bozin, 5th in the
high jump. Michigan women did well in the javelin, too. Brit Klanert,
Eastern Michigan, finished 10th and Lynlee Phillips, Michigan State,
finished 13th. For results and video highlights see

MICHIGAN HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION STATE FINALS
Scott Sullivan's informal notes on MHSAA LP finals: The big D-2 stories
were Tim Ross sweeping 1600 & 3200 (despite having popped hip out of
alignment while moving bathtub 4 days earlier) & U-M-bound Cadillac senior
Katie Erdman sweeping 800 & 1600 by a ton (faster times than D1 winners
Ashley Patten & Nikki Bohnsack). Most impressive. Tim
Moore won the D-1 1600 & 3200 as expected. Biggest D-1 sensation was Ken
Ferguson of state-champion Detroit Mumford, who annihilated both state
hurdles records & anchored Mumford's 800 & 1600 relays to winning,
state-record times.
