EVENTS FOR EVERYONE AT THE GREAT RACE XVIII, ELKHART
There's something for everyone here, with 25 events ranging from a half-marathon to a dance marathon. For runners and walkers, there's the half-marathon from Goshen to Elkhart, a 5K run and walk, 5K power walk, 10K run and 10K power walk. The Great Race is a community celebration, much like the Crim in Flint. Generous prize money guarantees good competition. Running events are on Monday, May 27. Check the website for additional information: http://www.thegreatrace.net

RITZENHEIN NAMED BIG 12TH FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Linda Glaske of the North Kent Running Club sent us this news: University of Colorado distance runner Dathan Ritzenhein was named the 2002 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Freshman of the Year by the league's coaches on Wednesday. Ritzenhein becomes the first Big 12 track and field athlete to sweep freshman of the year honors in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track and field. Ritzenhein, a native of Rockford, Mich., on Sunday won the Big 12 5,000 meters, clocking 13:56.21. His best time of the year came May 3 at the Cardinal Invitational, when he ran 13:27.77. Ritzenhein also won the Big 12 indoor 3,000 meters, and last fall he placed fourth in the NCAA cross country championships, helping Colorado win its first men's cross country national title.
