EVENTS FOR EVERYONE AT THE GREAT RACE XVIII, ELKHART
There's something for everyone here, with 25 events ranging from a
half-marathon to a dance marathon. For runners and walkers, there's the
half-marathon from Goshen to Elkhart, a 5K run and walk, 5K power walk,
10K run and 10K power walk. The Great Race is a community celebration,
much like the Crim in Flint. Generous prize money guarantees good
competition. Running events are on Monday, May 27. Check the website for

AMERICAN PHYSIQUE RUNNING FESTIVAL DATE CORRECTION
Michigan Runner magazine's Annual Calendar lists the wrong date for the
American Pbysique Running Festival in Spring Arbor. The correct date is
July 20, 2002. Events begin at 8:15 am
MICHIGAN COLLEGE TEAMS WIN TRACK AND FIELD TITLES
. The University of Michigan women's track and field team won the Big Ten
Championship meet last weekend at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, West Catholic West HS) won the individual
5000 meter championship and Rachel Sturtz (Traverse City HS) took the 800
meter individual title. Coach James Henry was named Big Ten Coach of the
Year for the 2002 outdoor season. Michigan women also won the Big Ten T &
F Indoor Championship.
. Eastern Michigan men's track and field team won their 19th Mid-American
Conference championship on their home track May 18, at Rynearson Stadium.
Boaz Cheboiywo and Gavin Thompson finished one-two in the 5,000 meter run
and Brad Fairchild was named Coach of the year.
RITZENHEIN NAMED BIG 12TH FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Linda Glaske of the North Kent Running Club sent us this news: University
of Colorado distance runner Dathan Ritzenhein was named the 2002 Big 12
Outdoor Track & Field Freshman of the Year by the league's coaches on
Wednesday. Ritzenhein becomes the first Big 12 track and field athlete to
sweep freshman of the year honors in cross country, indoor track and
outdoor track and field. Ritzenhein, a native of Rockford, Mich., on
Sunday won the Big 12 5,000 meters, clocking 13:56.21. His best time of
the year came May 3 at the
Cardinal Invitational, when he ran 13:27.77. Ritzenhein also won the Big
12 indoor 3,000 meters, and last fall he placed fourth in the NCAA cross
country championships, helping Colorado win its first men's cross country
national title. Next up for Ritzenhein is the NCAA 5000 meters in Baton
Rouge, La., on June 1.
