FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS ON MICHIGAN RUNNER TV
What's it like to race under the lights, especially when the lights are
the wonderful holiday light display at Dominos Farms in Ann Arbor? This
week's Michigan Runner TV lets you see the January 5, 2002 kids run and 5K
for yourself. The show includes interviews with winner Laurel Park,
masters winner Dave Furey and Michigan Runner columnist Tom Henderson. For
complete results see www.athleticventures.com. http://michiganrunner.com.
TIM BROE WINS USATF 8K CHAMPIONSHIP IN NY CENTRAL PARK
Tim Broe earned the bib number "1" in the USATF 8K Championship Saturday,
April 6 in Central Park. Broe, an Ann Arbor resident training with Ron
Warhurst and the University of Michigan track team, won the race in 22:26
against an incredible field. 41 men ran sub-25:00 races. Allan Steinfeld,
President of the New York Road Runners Club, said during a telephone
interview with Tim Broe and the press on March 15 that he believed Broe
was the "man to beat. " He issued Broe bib number "1" just to make sure we
knew he wasn't kidding.
For his part, Broe downplayed his chances before the race. "I'm hoping to
make the top 3, he said. "I'm looking forward to going to New York and
running in Central Park. "8K is really a long distance for me. "I think
Abdi Abdiraham is the man to beat." Abdi Abdirahman came in 4th 16 seconds
later, behind Dan Browne, 2nd (22:29) and Anthony Famiglietti, 3rd
(22:30). Broe won $5,000 for his effort, but he didn't get the $25,000
bonus for breaking Alberto Salazar's US 8K record of 22:04.
Other Michiganders fared quite well. Several Hanson's Team members
finished in the money: Brian Sell, 9th, Joe Gibson, 12th, and Jeff
Campbell, 14th. Others in the top 20 had Michigan connections: Todd
Williams, 11th, Richie Brinker, 17th, Kyle Baker, 20th

race posted by Salmini Films at

2002. Deena Drossin broke Paula Radcliffe's 5K world record by three
seconds with a 14:54.
Deena wasn't the only one having a good day. Pinckney, Michigan's Monica
Joyce won the Masters title and the $1,000 prize with a 16:48-the fastest
time and best place in the three years she has run this race.
2002 1st place - Masters 16:48
2001 2nd place - Masters 17:09
2000 3rd place - Masters 17:18
5K World record holder Sammy Kipketer won the men's race in 13:17; Eddy
Hellebuyck won the men's masters race in 14:48. For complete results see

SULLIVAN AWARD GOES TO MICHELLE KWAN
We were hoping the Amateur Athletic Union would name Alan Webb the
recipient of the Sullivan Award, given annually to the Top Amateur
Athlete. Ice skater Michelle Kwan got the nod for 2001 at a presentation
in New York last night; she's only the second skater to have won the
award. In addition to Webb, others on the short list were Natalie
Coughlin (swimming), Mark Prior (baseball), and Sean Townsend
(gymnastics).
"All five athletes were selected based on their qualities of leadership,
character, sportsmanship and the ideals of amateurism in the year 2001,
"said AAU officials. Other athletes who have won the award are Rulon
Gardner (wrestling), Bill Bradley (basketball) and Bobby Jones (golf).
