CHURCHILL'S HALF MARATHON CELEBRATES THE 35TH
One of this area's oldest continuing road races is celebrating its 35th
anniversary this Sunday. The race is named for its founder, Walt
Churchill, Jr, who is also of the founding members of the Toledo Road
Runners Club. The race begins at 2:00 pm at the Fort Meigs School.
Participants never know what early March weather will have in store, but
Race Director Tony Bayford wants runners to know that, unlike the early
years when the race was held in a park or began and ended at Fort Meigs
Fort, they have a warm, dry building in which to enjoy postrace
refreshments and find out whether they won one of the numerous awards.
Runners who expect to finish after 4:10 or so can start half an hour early
so they can catch the award ceremony.
The course is a certified Half Marathon that contains come moderate hills
but is mostly flat and fast. Churchills has lots of awards, too. Open and
masters awards go three deep; senior winners will receive special awards
and seventy-five age group awards will be proportionally distributed. See
www.toledoroadrunners.org for a printable entry form.
EMU MEN'S DISTANCE RELAY TEAM HEADS TO NCAA'S
EMU's Men's Distance Medley Relay team ran 9:36.79- the 10th fatest time
in the country this year, and good for 5th place at the Alex Wilson Invite
at Notre Dame this past Friday night. EMU's team of Jason Desilets, Nduka
Awazie, Feder Estelus and Neil Kirk qualified for this weekend's NCAA
Indoor National Championships (Friday March 8 and Saturday, March 9) at
the University of Arkansas. University of Michigan's team placed 8th;
Michigan State placed 10th. (Times at ND were in yards (9:40.29) but then
converted to metric times.
BROE WINS 3000, THEN PR'S IN MILE FOR CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLE
Tim Broe continued his indoor roll by winning the US National Indoor title
in the 3000, last weekend at the New York Amory Track and Field Center.
Jason Hubbard of Hanson's team placed 7th; MSU assistant coach and
Michigan Runner of the Year Kyle Baker placed 9th and Richie Brinker of
Hanson's placed 10th. A couple of hours later, Broe was ready to go
again. This time he set his PR in the mile race, taking third behind
winner Jason Lunn and Brian Berryhill.

NSSF'S NIKE INDOOR CLASSIC 2002 THIS WEEKEND
The National Scholastic Sports Foundation's Nike Indoor Classic has
attracted the United States leader in most of its girls events. The March
9-10 event is being held at the Prince Georges County Sports and Learning
Complex, Landover, Maryland. Meet co-director Mike Byrnes is excited about
such events as the Girls 4 x 800M Relay:
"The 4x800mR features the return of the great ROCKFORD team. Year after
year they are superb. 2002 is no exception. But there are a few others
out there who will give them a run for their money, especially BROMFIELD,
MA. they ran 9:10 last year and have the entire team returning."
Rockford girls are also the team to beat in the 4 x 1 mile relay and the
distance medley relay (1200-400-800-1600).
