OLYMPIC CLOSING CEREMONY: KISS AND CADILLAC
The Olympic closing ceremony featured bands of all kinds. Who could have imagined Donnie and Marie on the same stage with KISS? Anyone who has ever been a KISS fan should check out the 1975 KISS visit to Cadillac, Michigan at http://neffzone.com/kiss/. What does this have to do with Michigan running? Michigan Runner senior editor Jim Neff was the inspiration behind the KISS visit and he created the Web site which tells the extraordinary story. Imagine school administrators in full KISS makeup and you'll get the idea.

MICHIGAN's KEVIN COOK WINS SCHWARNEGER'S PUMP AND RUN
by Matt McGowan
COLUMBUS, OH 2/24/02)-- If you are a guy and you can break 18:00 minutes for a 5km and lift your weight* 30 times; or if you are a women and you break 19:30 and lift your weight* 26 times you would have been in the running for the top award in the second annual Arnold 5K Pump and Run. The race attracted over 450 athletes to bench press their weight* and then run a 5km, making this event the largest of its kind in the country.
Even though Arnold Schwarzengger was a few minutes late to start the race the crowd cheered as he arrived for the start. The race is held in conjunction with the largest Fitness Expo in the World: the Arnold Fitness Weekend.Woodhaven, Michigan's master Kenneth Cook lifted 90% of his weight 30 times and then ran 17:55 to win the Arnold 5K Pump and Run with a time of 2:55. Thirty seconds per rep was subtracted off his running time for the 2:55. Former Michigander and current Columbus resident Lisa Veneziano lifted 70% of her weight and then ran 19:10 to record a winning time of 6:10 for the women's gold.

MICHIGAN RUNNER INTRODUCES 2002 RACE SERIES
In 1979, Michigan Runner magazine began the tradition of honoring the Michigan Runner of the Year. Former editor Dave Foley developed the system by which points are awarded for performances in prize-money races .In the last couple of years, competitive runners have had a more difficult time deciding what races to enter as fewer races are awarding significant prize money, some distances haven't been represented in prize money events and Grand Rapids seems to have a lock on cash 5K races. The Michigan Runner editors want the Michigan Runner of the Year competition to continue to attract our state's fastest runners. Competitors should also be able to know ahead of time which races will count for points and a variety of distances and locations should be represented.

Michigan Runner introduces its 2002 Race Series to address these issues. These are the races which will count for the Michigan Runner of the Year in 2002. The first, second and third Michigan runners in the open and masters divisions will earn points toward the title. River Bank Run, The Crim Festival of Races 10 Mile and the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank International Marathon earn double points. Also, for the first time, the Michigan Runner will recognize state champions at each distance.

Kyle Baker and Amy Wing are the current Michigan Runners of the Year 2001. Who will be the fastest Michigan runners in 2002? Check the results of these races to find out:
