SWEETHEART RUN 10K RELAY, FLUSHING, SATURDAY, FEB. 16
by Art McCaffferty
Anne and John Gault have traveled all over the United States scoring races, but it seems they really appreciate putting on their Flushing races as well as their highly popular Mackinac Island runs. Flushing has a couple of nice places to have a post-race wheat juice. Two identical 5K loops, two partners, is the formula for the perfect Valentine's Day relay. Each relay partner runs one loop. Individuals can run one loop for the 5K or two for the 10K. Early registrants can sign up for the race sweatshirt. Relay awards go three deep in each age group. Races begin at 10:00 am, Flushing Central Elementary School. Register online: http://gaultracemanagement.com.

MICHIGANDERS TOPS AT MEN'S XC WINTER NATIONALS
by Scott Sullivan
Michigan's "Tim-Tim Club" beat opponents like drums at the U.S. Winter Cross Country Championships. A Wolverine-stater named Dathan had a great day as well.

Tim Broe, who trains at the University of Michigan, rolled like the nearby Columbia River to win the senior men's 4-kilometer title Saturday, breaking tape in 11:26.

Broe, fresh from running an American indoor 3,000-meter record of 7:39.23 Jan. 27, outkicked four foes down the homestretch at historic Fort Vancouver. Close behind were Jorge Torres (11:27), Tony Cosey (11:28), Dave Davis (11:29) and Matt Lane (11:30).

Moore, a Novi High School senior bound for Notre Dame, continued his unbeaten season Sunday, claiming the junior men's 8K by seven seconds. Moore, who captured the Footlocker High School Nationals Dec. 8 in Orlando, finished the nearly-five-mile Winter Nationals course in 24:48. Rod Kaborsi was second in 24:55, William Nelson third in 25:04.

The Novi Supernova's heralded rematch with fellow prep star Bobby Lockhart proved no contest. Lockhart, who battled Moore tooth and nail at Footlocker, finished a well-beaten fifth in 25:18.

Dathan Ritzenhein, the ex-Rockford Rocket who placed third at the world junior men's 8K last season, stepped up to the senior 12K Sunday. The University of Colorado freshman finished fifth among the elite and professional harriers in 36:19.

Joining Ritzenhein on the U.S. cross country world team will be fellow top-six finishers Meb Keflezighi (35:45), Abdi Abdirahman (35:45), Alan Culpepper (35:51), Matt Downin (36:00) and Greg Jimmerson (36:27). All but Culpepper and Ritzenhein were members of last year's surprise world bronze-medal team.

Sterling Height's Katie Danyko finished in the middle of a talented pack (22:44) in the junior girls 6K race. Katie's coach is Hansons Running Shop and Team USA's Kevin Hanson.

PRINS RESIGNS; ROCKFORD GIRLS WIN MIDWEST RELAYS
Brad Prins retirement from his Rockford coaching position became official Monday night at the Rockford School Board's meeting. While the nationally-ranked Rockford program looks for an assistant track and field coach to succeed Prins and someone else to fill the head track coaching position vacated by Jim Baker, the Rockford Girls showed their stuff at the Adidas Midwest Indoor Track Classic. Fielding two teams in both the 4 x 1 Mile and Distance Medley Relays, the Rockford girls, representing the North Kent Running Club, won both first and second places at Saturday's meet. They also won first at the 4 x 800 relay at at the Devaney Sports Complex at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
