CITIZENS BANK GROUND HOG GALLOP, JACKSON, SATURDAY, FEB. 2
Last week's January thaw is history and we're back to winter's ice and snow. The Citizens Bank Ground Hog Gallop in Jackson falls on Ground Hog Day this Saturday, February 2, 2002, reminding us that Spring could be around the corner. The Jackson Area Race Directors Association cordially invites all runners and walkers to enjoy one of the best organized and scenic races in Michigan. The four mile run and the non-judged 5K walk wind through residential neighborhoods and around Jackson's Cascades Falls Park. TIM BROE SETS AMERICAN RECORD AT ADIDAS BOSTON INDOOR GAMES
We have another Michigan Mecca Milestone. Larry Eder, Editor of "American Track and Field", tells the story: "The night before the Adidas Boston Indoor Games, I was speaking with Michigan coach Ron Warhurst and his group of athletes. After meeting steepler Tim Broe, I promised him a cover on "American Track and Field" with an American record. Well, he has made me have to live up to that promise.
"The week before the Adidas Boston Indoor Games, Tim Broe ran 7:49 for 3,000 meters. Leonard Mucheru of Kenya/New Balance, had run a 3:56 mile at the Armory in NYC, and that was the day after winning a road mile in Puerto Rico!
"Muchero and Broe were the class of the field. The pack hit the 400 meters in 60.85, 800 meters in 2:03.67, and 1200 meters in 3:05.7 with Broe taking the lead, hitting the mile at 4:08, and 2000 meters in 5:09.47. 2400 meters was hit in 6:09.78 and 2800 meters in 7:09. Broe and Muchero had changed leads several times, but Tim Brow was full of running. When Leonard Muchero went by Broe with 100 to go, Broe did not falter, but chased Muchero to the finish. Leonard ran 7:37:46 and Tim Broe was rewarded with his courageous running in an American record of 7:39:23, breaking a twenty-one year old record, held by Steve Scott, in 7:39.94! "Jonathan Riley, from Brookline, and at Stanford, broke from the second pack and ran a fine 7:46.84. The crowd was on its feet, as Davis and Holman, the announcers, made sure that the crowd knew that the record run was on. Steve Holman had Leonard Mucheru and Tim Broe on the dais, as he had many of the winners, and did short interviews for the audience." At the same meet, University of Michigan assistant coach and Canadian mile record holder Kevin Sullivan ran a 3:55.80 indoor mile to take second behind Bernard Lagat's 3:55:16.

PLAN AHEAD FOR CHURCHILL'S HALF MARATHON 35TH ANNIVERSARY
Start your training and mark the date: Sunday, March 10. One of this area's oldest continuing road races is planning a special event to celebrate their 35th anniversary. Churchill's Half Marathon in Perrysburg, Ohio has long been a favorite with Michigan runners. The race begins at 2:00 pm at the Fort Meigs School. Race director Tony Bayford tells us that those of us who expect to finish after 2:10 or so can start half an hour early. This allows the award ceremony to be held in a timely manner. The course is a TAC certified Half Marathon that contains come moderate hills but is mostly flat and fast. Churchills has lots of awards, too. Open and masters awards go three deep; senior winners will receive special awards and seventy-five age group awards will be proportionally distributed. KATHLEEN GINA HEADS UP TWO DOGS HALF MARATHON TRAINING
. Speaking of training, the Ann Arbor Track Club's Kathleen Gina is beginning a new half-marathon training program: the Two Dogs Running Half Marathon Training Program. The sixteen week half marathon program is geared toward the Dexter Ann Arbor Half Marathon. Weekly group runs begin Saturday, February 9 at Gallop Park, 9:00 am. MICHIGAN RUNNER'S ONLINE CALENDAR
For those of you have asked about the Michigan Runner's Online Calendar, here's the scoop: "Michigan Runner" magazine moved it's annual calendar to the March issue this year. The December 1 deadline was too early for many race director. With the move, both our print and online calendar's will include many more events. Our online calendar should be available by Monday, February 4. In the meantime, this newsletter carries calendar events for upcoming weeks.
