FIRST LADY MICHELLE ENGLER RUNS DISNEY HALF MARATHON LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL
(1/6/02)-- Michigan's First Lady, Michelle Engler, ran the Walt Disney World Half Marathon in support of the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA). NACoA, one of six charitable organizations participating in the Walt Disney World Marathon and Half Marathon, was founded in 1983 to advocate for changes in health care, social services and preventive services on behalf of children affected by family alcoholism and drug dependencies.

First Lady Engler finished the Walt Disney World Half Marathon in a mid-pack 2:38::25 (chip time). First Lady Engler has been an active participant and coordinator of charitable campaigns such as literacy, breast cancer awareness, the Michigan Harvest Gathering and Detroit's Susan Komen Race for the Cure. A partner in the Houston law firm Nathan, Wood and Sommers before her marriage in 1990, Michelle Engler played softball, basketball and volleyball in high school. First Lady Engler and her husband Governor John Engler are the parents of triplets, Hannah, Maggie and Madeline, age 7.

RUNNING MAY MAKE YOU SMARTER
Our daughter, Heather McCafferty, sent us this intriguing news from Reuters Health: "Running may give the brain a workout, too. A new study finds that individuals consistently scored higher on intellectual tests after embarking on a running program.

These improvements, however, went down when [runners] stopped their training, which suggests that ongoing exercise is required to maintain the benefit," said study lead author Dr. Kisou Kubota of Nihon Fukushi University in Handa, Japan. The findings were presented in San Diego at a recent meeting of the Society for Neuroscience."
