Michigan Runner TV presents its first Internet TV show of 2002: the 32nd

every kid completing the one mile run gets a trophy and everybody in the
four mile event wears the same number: 2001. http://michiganrunner.tv
ADDITION TO MICHIGAN RUNNING'S TOP STORIES, 2001
Daniel Deyo sent this significant story that we missed in our January 1,
2002 Special Edition:
October: "One note that may escape many, or may not seem significant, was
the passing of Al Kayner of Bay City in October. Mr. Kayner was one of the
early race directors in Michigan & one of the first to use racing to raise
money for charities. He directed a race on Labor Day to raise money for
Jerry's Kids. He also put on The Bay City St Pat's Race to raise money for
Special Olympics. One of the runners was Bobby Crim. Crim took the idea &
decided to start his own race for Special Olympics. He in fact stated in
many interviews that the Bay City race was his inspiration to start the
Crim 10 Miler. The Bay Area Runners' Club has renamed the St Pat's race to
The Al Kayner St. Pat's Races."
CAN YOU BEAT THESE TIMES?
There is still time to get your best 2001 times into the Michigan Runner
magazine's annual "Best of Times" and "Top 100 Marathoners" features. If
you are a Michigan resident and you ran a fast certified race, let the
editor know the time, the race, and your age group by January 14, 2002.

SALT LAKE 2002 OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY IN MICHIGAN JANUARY 6-7.
The Olympic Torch Relay is coming through Michigan on its way to Utah. The
Torch arrives in Lansing after crossing Lake Michigan from Milwaukee.
Torch Relay sponsor Chevrolet may have had a hand in choosing the Michigan
route: Lansing, Flint, Birmingham, Royal Oak, Ferndale, Detroit, Ann
Arbor. From Ann Arbor, the Torch Relay will make its way to Indianapolis.
Hamilton Chevrolet on Fourteen Mile Road in Warren expects to be
supporting the Relay on Sunday, January 6, between 1pm and 5 pm. The Relay
will be in Ann Arbor beginning about 9:20 am and concluding about 11:00
am, Monday, January 7 at Rampy Chevrolet on Jackson Road. The Salt Lake
Organizing Committee set up community task forces drawn from cities along
the route. These task forces judged more than 200,000 nominations accepted
during March and April of 2001. Olympic triathlete Sheila Taormina is
among the Michigan torchbearers. You can check the list of Michigan
torchbearers at www.2002.coke.com.
