INTENATIONAL, NATIONAL AND LOCAL CHARITIES RUNNING WITH THE 2002 DETROIT MARATHON

If you cannot seem to motivate yourself to get into gear for the October 6, 2002 event, there are some organizations that might give you the push you need to step up. Whether you wish to see your efforts support a local charity here in Detroit or a cause with statewide, national or international reach, you can find a reason to run in the Detroit Marathon this year.
The Marathon Strides Against MS is for veterans or beginners, relay teams or marathoners. In their training program they incorporate seasoned runners and walkers offering personalized advice for all participants. In addition to making your contribution to your personal health in preparing for the event, you can aid Marathon Strides Against MS in raising funds to fight Multiple Sclerosis. The Arthritis Foundation has a program called Joints in Motion Training Team. This program is one of the premier fundraising groups for the Arthritis Foundation. They offer opportunities for training in a fun team environment. In looking up their web site at www.arthritis.com you can find more information about Arthritis which affects roughly 1.5 million men, women and children in the state of Michigan alone.
Team Diabetes will help raise funds for the American Diabetes Association. Team Diabetes is hailed as one of the top running and walking endurance training programs in the country. Are you interested in helping abroad? If you would like to assist children living in crumbling, crowded orphanages in Russia, the Freedom Swings organization is for whom you should run. Detroit is fortunate to have the Metropolitan United Methodist Church in the New Center area. The Reverend Dr. Julius Del Pino started a movement to help the marginalized and disenfranchised youth of Detroit.
