September

The nationally-ranked Calvin men's and women's cross country teams flashed
their dominant form at the MIAA jamboree hosted by St. Mary's College Saturday
afternoon. Ranked sixth in the latest NCAA III poll, the Calvin men claimed six
of the top eight and eight of the top ten spots to post a first place score of
19 points. On the women's side, fourth-ranked Calvin posted a perfect score of
15 points behind a 1-2-3-4-5 finish.
Calvin sophomore Hendrik Kok (Lynden, WA) captured the men's race with a time
of 25:22, finishing 22 seconds ahead of Albion's Nick Mockeridge who took
second. Calvin junior Matt Edwards (Grand Blanc HS) was third in 25:52 followed
by sophomore Brian Maat (Holland Christian HS) in fourth (26:04); junior Tim
Avery (Rochester, NY) in fifth (26:04); and junior Brian Paff (National City,
CA) in sixth (26:04). Freshman Jessie Kleinjan (Chino, CA) was Calvin's sixth
finisher, placing eighth with a time of 26:07 while junior Kris Koster (Grand
Rapids Christian HS) was 10th in 26:16.
Combined, the Calvin men captured 15 of the top 19 spots.
In the women's race, Calvin junior Jessie Lair (Southfield Christian HS)
claimed first place honors with a time of 18:34. Lair finished twenty seconds
ahead of junior teammate Sarah Hastings (Traverse City Central HS) who took
second in 18:54. Junior Rachel Baber (Brandon, WI) took third in 19:01 with

Camille Medema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking fifth (19:21). Freshman
Rachel Reed (Oak Park, IL) was the sixth runner for Calvin, placing seventh in
19:27 with senior Tami VerMeulen (Holland Christian HS) rounding out Calvin's
top-seven with a 10th place time of 19:35.
The MIAA jamboree is worth one-third of the final league standings with the
MIAA Championships making up the remaining two-thirds. The MIAA Championships
will be hosted by Alma on November 2.
Both Calvin teams will now prepare to compete in the prestigious Notre Dame
Invitational October 4.
