FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Alan Wasielewski 219-631-7516

Irish earn second meet victory of the indoor season.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- (1-26-01) The University of Notre Dame women's
track and field team maintained its momentum from a season-opening meet
victory a week ago over Ball State and Western Michigan and defeated
Michigan State 88-71, Friday, Jan. 26, in the Loftus Sports Center. The
Irish won nine of 15 events in the meet, led by two multiple-event winners.
Long jump All-American Tameisha King (Mableton, Ga.) continued to
be the Irish catalyst, winning two individual events versus the Spartans.
King, coming off three event victories a week ago, won the long jump
competition (19-3 1/2) and the 60-meter high hurdles (8.65).
The other multiple event winner for the Irish was sprinter Liz Grow
(New Braunfels, Texas). Grow stepped down to the 60 meters, a race she
usually does not compete in, and won easily in 7.56. Teammate Ayesha Boyd
(Spartanburg, SC) was second in the 60 meters in 7.71. Grow and Boyd were
together again in the 200 meters, as Grow won in 24.24 and Boyd took second
place in 25.15.
Both sprinters were not done for the evening. Grow and Boyd helped
the Irish 4x400 relay team finish first in 3:51.07.
Kymia Love (Memphis, Tenn.) enabled the Irish to boast a sweep in
the sprints by taking first in the 400 meters (53.20).
Maintaining the lead that the sprinters established for the team,
the Irish field event specialists secured the meet victory for the Irish.
Notre Dame continued to dominate the pole vault, taking first through
fourth place in the event. Jaime Volkmer (Kearney, Neb.) broke the school
record of 11-4 that Jill VanWeelden (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Natalie Hallett
(Huntington Beach, Calif.) set just the week before. Volkmer cleared 11-10
to set a new school mark and had three very good attempts at 12-4. Volkmer
also boasted a second-place finish in the triple jump (38-1 1/4).
VanWeelden (10-6) finished the pole vault in third while Hallett took
second (11-0).
Freshman Jennifer Kearney (Dallas, Texas) won her second collegiate
high jump competition in as many weeks by clearing 5-5, scoring more
important field event points for the Irish. Also notable, senior Emily
Bienko (Tranquillity, NJ) won the shot put with a toss of 41-10.
Notre Dame will return to action next Friday, Feb. 2, the first day
of competition in the Meyo Invitational.
