Track and Field Posts Impressive Results At Mt. SAC Relays

Irish effort highlighted by Ryan Shay qualifying for the NCAA 5,000-meter
run and Pat Conway winning the 1,500 meters.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- (4-23-01) The University of Notre Dame men's
and women's track and field teams traveled to Walnut, Calif., over the
weekend to compete in the 2001 Mt. SAC Relays. Traditionally one of the top
events of the outdoor season, the Irish enjoyed a number of significant
results at the meet.
Senior All-American distance specialist Ryan Shay (Central Lake,
Mich.) qualified for his second event at the NCAA Championship meet by
running a 13:54.77 in the 5,000 meters. Shay's 18th-place effort in the
elite field (he was the ninth collegiate runner to cross the finish line)
puts him in position to run both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters at the NCAA
Championship meet May 30 - June 2, in Eugene, Ore.. Shay previously
qualified for the 10,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational in March.
Cross country All-American Pat Conway (Springfield, Va.) won his
second consecutive 1,500-meter race at the Mt. SAC meet, taking first place
in 3:50.24. Sophomore Tom Gilbert (Rock Falls, Ill.) took fourth place in
the long jump with a 22-8 measurement - a team-best effort for the outdoor
season.
Junior Quill Redwine (San Antonio, Texas) placed well in both the
triple jump and high jump, finished ninth in the triple with a team-best
(47-3 1/2) and clearing 6-8 3/4 in the high jump to take fourth-place in
the competition.
For the women's team, freshman Megan Johnson (Seattle, Wa.)
continues to excel in the 1,500 meters after finishing third (4:30.66) in
the second section of the event this weekend. Sophomore Tameisha King
(Mableton, Ga.) also placed well in her event, finishing fourth in her
section in the 100-meter hurdles (14.45).
The men's and women's team also competed at the Indy Invitational
this past weekend and results will be released as soon as they become
available. The Irish will return to action this weekend at the 2001 Drake
Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
