TIM MOORE IS NATIONAL FOOTLOCKER X-C CHAMPION
Tim Moore of Novi High School ran the race of his life to win the 23rd
Footlocker High School Cross Country Nationals Saturday, December 8, 2001.
This is the third year in a row that a Michigan high school runner has won
the national title. Dathan Ritzenhein holds the 1999 and 2000 titles. Tim
Ross of Caledonia was fifth in 14:57, helping the Midwest Boys take the
team championship. Both Moore and Ross won All-American honors. Adam
Ludwig of St. Joseph, Michigan finished in 16:02 for 28th place.
Although Moore returned to Disney's Oak Trails Golf Course in Lake Buena
Vista, Florida, holding last year's best returning time, he had never run
a sub-15:00 cross country race. Virginia's Bobby Lockhart, with two
sub-15:00 cross country times earlier this season, was the odds-on
favorite.
By the final mile, the race was down to Lockhart and Moore. The outcome
wasn't decided until the final stretch as the two traded surges and the
lead until the last few steps. Moore hit the tape a second before Lockhart
to win the championship in 14:50, 20 seconds faster than he'd ever before
run a cross country race. For Marc Bloom's race story and Amby Burfoot's
post race interview with Tim Moore, see Runner's World Online:

In the girls race Amber Trotter of Ukiah, California, ran an astonishing
16:24 5K to capture the title and set a meet record. Sophomore Nikki
Bohnsack, Rockford HS, placed 25th in 18:14; Amber Smith, a sophomore from
Ishpeming HS, placed 29th in 18:34. For complete results see the 2001

GIFT IDEAS FOR RUNNERS: BOOKS
Before her marriage Thanksgiving weekend, our daughter's routine included
a run around the neighborhood three times each week. No matter how busy
she was with college classes and the wedding, she got that run in. Just
before she'd leave on her run, she'd pick up one of several running
publications on our coffee table and read an article. "Reading about
running inspires me," she'd say. Now that she's in her new home, she'll
need some new sources of inspiration. Santa will be choosing a book for
her among these favorites:
* Amby Burfoot. The Runner's Guide to the Meaning of Life; What 35 Years
of Running Has Taught Me About Winning, Losing, Happiness, Humility, and
the Human Heart. Emmaus, Pennsylvania, Rodale Books, 2000.
* Chris Lear. Running with the Buffaloes; a Season Inside with Mark
Wetmore, Adam Goucher, and the University of Colorado Men's Cross Country
Team. Guilford, Connecticut, The Lyons Press, 2000.
* Bob Schwartz. I Run, There I Am Nuts; Why We Carbo Load, Fartlek Train,
Hit the Wall and Love Every Minute of It. Champaign, Illinois, Human
Kinetics, 2001.
* Keith McClellan. The Hero Within Us; A History of Track & Field in the
Twentieth Century From a Michigan Perspective. Oak Park, Michigan, Eastern
Michigan Press, 2001.
RENEE RIENAS JOINS MICHIGAN RUNNER TEAM
Renee Rienas, former Race Director of the Dexter Ann Arbor Run and a
lifelong runner, has joined the staff of Great Lakes Sports Publications,
Inc. As Director of Marketing and Sales for The Michigan Runner, Renee
will primarily be working with the clients of the Michigan Runner.
However, she will also have the opportunity to work with golf and ski
clients as well.
"Renee seemed like a perfect choice for us," said publisher Art
McCafferty. "Renee certainly knows the sport well, is well liked, is a
hard and competent worker and just as importantly, she has an appreciation
for the direction that online publishing is taking. Renee will be working
with Michigan event directors to help them market their race in print,
online and, now, Internet Television. We hope to replicate the success we
have had with our Michigan Golfer and Michigan Skier Internet Television
shows."
GLSP launched one of the first Internet Televison shows in the world on
golf (http://michigangolfer.tv) in March 2001. Skiing
(http://michiganskier.tv) and running (http://michiganrunner.tv) began
showing in Fall 2001. "I feel that Internet Television will allow event
directors to be more aggressive in going after sponsors. Sponsors might be
more eager to part with some of their hard earned dollars, if they knew
that their events would be on Internet Television for the entire community
to see," said McCafferty. "We feel Renee will be able to communicate that
message to our clients. We are very excited to have her aboard."
CORRECTION: KATY BOYLES DID RUN NCAA'S
In our November 14, 2001 Michigan Running News, we reported "Freshman
Kalin Toedebusch (22:07) was the leading runner for 24th place Villanova.
Katy Boyles was a leading runner for Cornell all season, but she did not
race at the National meet in Greenville." Robert Toedebusch (Kalin's Dad)
let us know: "Katy Boyles did run in Greenville. She did not finish the
race as she dropped out at the two mile marker."
