TIM MOORE COMMITS TO NOTRE DAME
The University of Notre Dame reports that Tim Moore, Novi, has signed a
letter of intent to enroll at Notre Dame next season and to compete for
the men's cross country and track and field teams. Moore will join NCAA
Cross Country All-American Ryan Shay (Central Lake) and Kevin Avenius,
also Novi.
MOORE WINS FOOTLOCKER MIDWEST REGIONALS
With a solid win in the Footlocker Midwest Regional at the University of
Wisconsin-Parkside, Kenosha, November 24, Tim Moore of Novi, solidified
his status as the favorite to win the Footlocker Nationals. Tim finished
1st in the field of 332 seeded runners from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana,
Missouri, Wisconsin, Kansas, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma,
Colorado, and Minnesota. His time of 15:11 was 7 seconds faster than
second place Chris Solinski of Stevens Point, Wisconsin. The top eight
finishers in each of four regions are eligible to run the Footlocker
Nationals in Orlando, December 8.
Nikki Bonsack, a sophomore from Rockford qualified for the Footlocker
National race with a second place finish in 18:08 on the windy, rainy
Saturday. Both Moore and Bohnsack are the MHSAA Lower Peninsula Division
1 2001 Cross Country champions. Amber Smith, a sophomore from Ishpeming,
placed third among the 408 girls in the seeded race with 18:21. Smith is
the UP Division 2 champion. Erika Odlaug, senior, of Bannockburn, IL won
the Midwest girls race in 17:49.
Adam Ludwig, senior, St. Joe, fifth in 15:37 and Tim Ross, senior, Alto,
sixth in 15:40 also qualified for the highly selective Footlocker National
race. Ross is the 2001 MHSAA LP D2 XC champion; Ludwig placed 3rd in the
D2 finals. Andrew Bauer, senior, Bloomfield Hills, came heartbreakingly
close with his ninth place finish in 15:47 and is an alternate for the
National race in Orlando. He finished second in the D2 finals. Check the
Midwest Regional site for photos and complete results,

RUNNER'S WORLD, EMU INTERVIEW NCAA CHAMP BOAZ CHEBOIYWO
Five races, five wins, five course records and the NCAA cross country
title is getting Boaz Cheboiywo more than his allotted 15 minutes of fame.
Runner's World Online features Cheboiywo in today's Brief Chat,
http://runnersworld.com. Check the archives for Wednesday, November 28
after today. Eastern Michigan University's Eastern Echo clears up the
story behind Butler University's loss and EMU's gain. Although Butler
University wasn't able to clear the admission hurdles, Cheboiywo had no
problems with academic eligibility. In fact, Cheboiywo considers EMU a
perfect fit since he wants to become a teacher. "I want to have a second
option because your career can end at any time," he told Echo writer Tim
Wieland.
ALLEN TOLMICH ELECTED TO INT'L JEWISH SPORTS HALL OF FAME
Allen Tolmich is one of eight athletes elected to the International Jewish
Sports Hall of Fame for the year 2002. A Wayne State University student,
Tolmich broke the World record in the 200-Meter High Hurdlers twice on the
same day. At the AAU Championships in July, 1937, he set a new 200-Meter
H.H. record, 23.4, in the event's first heat, and lowered the mark to 23.3
in the finals. Tolmich set numerous U.S. indoor records in an assortment
of events, including the 760-Yard H.H., 110-Meter and 120-Yard H.H. In
1938, he established or tied 11 U.S. track & field records. Tolmich had
the misfortune of coming into his prime during the on-set of World War II,
when Olympic Games and World Championships were suspended.
Others being honored are Harry Lewis, World Welterweight Boxing Champion
1908-1913; Julia Jones Pugliese, co-founder of the Intercollegiate Women's
