MHSAA LOWER PENINSULA XC CHAMPIONS
BROOKLYN, MI (11/3/01)--You might think that Spring Lake's Girls cross
country team was having a bad day at the Michigan High School Athletic
Association Lower Peninsula Cross Country Finals when their first runner,
Rachel Jeltema, crossed the line in 20:28 for 33rd place. Then, true cross
country style, the improbable happened; the next four finished in a bunch
(41, 66, 71, 74) to capture the Division 3 team championship with a team
score of 176.
Big Rapids Boys (Division 2), Middleville-Thornapple Kellog Girls
(Division 2), and Rockford Girls (Division 1), successfully defended their
team titles. In addition to Spring Lake, new team champions for 2001 are
Lawton Boys (Division 4), Ann Arbor Greenhills Girls (Division 4),
Detroit Catholic Central Boys (Division 1) and Hemlock Boys (Division 3).
Caledonia's Tim Ross turned in the best boys time of the day (15:03)
to win the Division 2 individual title. Nicole Bush, Wyoming-Kellogsville,
is the only returning individual champion-- winning the Division 3
individual title for the second year in 18:39. Rockford's Nikki Bohnsack
had the girl's best time (17:40) to win Division 1.
Additional individual champions are Tim Moore, Novi, 15:11 (Division
1); Brandon Grybas, Stockbridge, 15:57 (Division 3); Vershawn Miller,
Detroit Benedictine, 19:49 (Division 4), Rebecca Walter, Birmingham
Groves: 18:40 (Division 2); Caitlin Kelly, Kinde-North Huron, 18:55
(Division 4). For complete results see http://www.mhsaa.com
