LOWER PENINSULA CROSS COUNTRY FINALS AT SPEEDWAY SATURDAY
Treat yourself to a day of fun and colorful cross country racing at the
Michigan International Speedway Saturday. Individual and team state titles
of all four Lower Peninsula divisions will be up for grabs in Brooklyn.
Divisions 3 and 4 race in the morning beginning at 10:00 am. Last race
begins at 11:30. Divisions 1 and 2 race in the afternoon at 1:30 with the
last race beginning at 3:00 pm.
NEW YORK CITY MARATHON HOSTS USATF CHAMPIONSHIPS
How fitting it is that the 2001 New York City marathon is the USATF
marathon championship race for both men and women. This Sunday, November
4, Jeff Campbell and Clint Verran of Hansons Team USA Training Center
program are among the contenders for the national title. Californian
Milena Glusac, who holds the River Bank Run USATF 25K title, hopes to add
the marathon to her string of 2001 victories. See a photo and an interview
with Clint on the New York City Road Runners site:
http://www.nyrrc.org/nyrrc/mar01/athletes/interviews/clintverran.html .
Whether you are going to New York to run the marathon or to be crowd
support, be sure to enter the Continental Airlines International
Friendship Run, Saturday morning, 8:00 am. This fun run, which begins at
the United Nations and ends at the Tavern on the Green, attracts most of
the International runners who run with the flags of their countries.
Among the very small group of Americans who will be running will be the
press and a contingent of marines from last week's Marine Corps Marathon.
NBC will telecast the marathon at 3:00 pm EST.
MICHIGAN RUNNER TV ARCHIVES: ADIDAS OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
While Michigan Runner TV is currently showing the Detroit Free
Press/Flagstar Bank International Marathon, you can also check the
Michigan Runner TV archives for last June's Adidas Outdoor Championships
in high school track and field at http://michiganrunner.tv/2001AOC/. See
the Rockford girls 4 x 800 relay, Dathan Ritzenhein's last high school run
and Alan Webb's anchor of the exciting 4 x 800 relay.
THE HERO WITHIN US; MCCLELLAN'S HISTORY OF MICHIGAN TRACK & FIELD
As high school and college cross country teams wind up their seasons in
the next couple of weeks, we find ourselves comparing today's records,
performances and races with those who came before. Keith McClellan has
given those of us who care about that history a tremendous gift. His book,
"The Hero Within Us; a History of Track and Field in the Twentieth Century
from a Michigan Perspective" was published earlier this year. The book
includes over 400 pages of stories and photographs of more than 250
Olympians, national champions and other record holders. To order, contact
Keith at 248.398.3429.
EAGLES MEN WIN MID AMERICAN CONFERENCE WITH RECORD SCORE
Boaz Cheboiywo led the Eastern Michigan University cross country team to
the Mid American Conference title, led the team to a meet record score of
30, ran a meet record time of 24:11 on the muddy course and let us know
that this was a slow race for him. Michigan members of the team included
Jordan Desilets (3), Steve Crane (9), Joey Borg (13) and Paul Pobursky
(14). Central Michigan's Jake Flynn was second in 25:12.
MICHIGAN STATE WOMEN WIN BIG 10 CROSS COUNTRY TITLE
Ann Sommerville (2), Michelle Carson (4), Jamie Krzyminski (6), Katie
Anderson (9) and Cindy Durocher (14) all ran under 18:00 to win the Big 10
Conference Title. Our reporter Carter Sherline reports on Alan Webb's
individual win: "Webb stayed back through the first half, and then stayed
on leader Matt Tegenkamp's (freshman at Wisconsin) tail until about 100m
to go, going by Tegenkamp like he was standing still for the win."
ANN ARBOR TURKEY TROT: SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18
The Ann Arbor Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk is Sunday, November 18, not
Thanksgiving Day as several calendars reported earlier. The race begins at
9:30 am at Ann Arbor's Huron High School, Fuller Road and Huron Parkway.
This year the race includes a kids 400 meter dash.
LORI STICH ZIMMERMAN WINS MARINE CORPS MARATHON
Former Michigander Lori Stich Zimmerman won last Sunday's Marine Corps
Marathon; her husband Paul Zimmerman, led most of the race, then faded
with a tight hamstring in the final miles. The Zimmermans are moving to
Austin, Texas from their Beaverton, Oregon home.
