SVSU CROSS COUNTRY INVITATIONAL
UNIVERSITY CENTER- The Saginaw Valley State University men's
and women's cross country teams held the SVSU Invitational on Friday.
The Lady Cardinals topped three teams to win
the women's race, while the men came in third among five teams.
Leading the way for the Lady Cardinals were
seniors Michele Scherer (Marquette) and Kate Fall (Vassar)
who tied for first place on the 6K course with the time of 24:17. Freshman
Diane Johnston (Grand Blanc) finished third with a time of 26:10, while
freshman Nicole Strohkirch (Gladwin) came in sixth with a time of
26:38. Sophomore Heather Kersjes (Corunna) was eighth at 26:51 for
SVSU.
Neil Smith of Macomb Community College won
the 8K men's race with a time of 27:36.
The Cardinal men were led by senior Mike
Irwin (Lapeer/West), who was fourth with a time of 27:57. Junior Tim
Watkins (New Boston/Riverview Gabriel Richard) came in 10th place at 28:31,
while junior Mark Crews (Bay City/Western) finished 14th (28:49), sophomore
Jim Wahl (St. Helen/Roscommon) was 19th (29:22), and sophomore Mohommed
Waite (East Lansing) finished 21st (29:36).
Saginaw Valley's next meet is Friday, September
8th, at the Northwood Invitational.
