(Ann Arbor) GOODRIDGE TO ATTEND UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN CROSS COUNTRY
CAMP
Coach John Goodridge of Athletics America, the Ann Arbor based Olympic
Development Distance Training Program will attend the July 23-July 28
Michigan Distance Camp directed by veteran Wolverine Coach Mike McGuire
conducted on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor.
Goodridge will be returning from the United States Olympic Track and
Field Trials in Sacramento where currently nine qualified athletes will
be wearing the red-white and blue Athletics America uniform who have
qualified in the 1500 meters, 3,000 meter steeplechase, 5,000 meters
and 10,000 meter events.
A very experienced Cross Country Coach at every level from junior high
school beginners to international level athletes Goodridge has consistently
developed champion individuals and teams throughout his career. Early
in his career he coached Eric Miller and his Gryphon teammmates to Michigan
Class D State Cross Country Individual and Team titles, the first in
the history of the Ann Arbor Greenhills School. Moving on to Michigan
State University he coached the MSU Women's Cross Country Team to their
first and only Big Ten Cross Country Championship as well as a fourth
place NCAA National finish, a still remaining MSU record. Taking over
the Wake Forest University Men's program, the perennial doormat of the
ACC he coached the program to its first ever ACC Individual(Nolan Swanson)
and Team Championship, as well as four ACC titles and the ACC record
for highest ever NCAA National placing, a third place finish. On the
international level he has served as the Head U.S. Coach for the World
University Cross Country Championships(Graz,Austria) and also has the
distinction of being the Head Coach of the last United States National
Cross Country Team to win the IAFF World Cross Country Championship
in 1989,Lisbon,Portugal.
A former Vice President of the United States Collegiate Cross Country
Coaches Association, he served as the Chairman of the TV Committee which
arranged for the first ever broadcast of the NCAA National Cross Country
Championships.
McGuire, the highly successful Michigan Coach and Goodridge have a long
relationship as Goodridge coached McGuire postcollegiately when he represented
the U.S. in the World Cross Country Championship as well as when he
won the Detroit Free Press Marathon in a debut 2:15.03.
