Long Runs
- By Doug Kurtis

09/11/03

Many runners are now peaking their mileage in preparation for the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon on October 5th. Running 20 miles or more several weeks before the event is often the final big hurdle. Some runners choose to do this alone.  A better way to prepare for race conditions would be to sign up for one of the long runs organized by the local running specialty shops and running clubs.

First timers need several long runs to help build confidence. Using the organized 20 mile runs can help relieve some of the pre race nervousness and it's an opportunity share concerns with other runners. Simulate the marathon by using the same shoes and clothing you plan to race with. Find the hot spots that may require rubbing on petroleum jelly.

The Marathon will have water stations just about every mile so it's possible to drink too much. The key is to discover how much is right for you, taking into consideration the weather conditions.  Don't forget to poor some over your head too. Make sure to try drinking Gatorade and eating GU if you plan to take some during the marathon. If not, attach your own special needs to your shorts or have someone on the course that would be able to help you.

Long runs improve the ability of your muscles to store and process carbohydrates and mentally prepare you for exercising for a long period of time.  Consistent mileage over the last three months is still the best method of preparation.  I contend that some of the long runs can be substituted with two medium distance runs in one day.  Break it up into say an 8 and 12 miler or 10 and 10 miler.

With just over three weeks of training to prepare the marathon, first timers especially should be building to a long run. If you go to the marathon web site www.freep.com/marathon then click training, you will find running stores that are sponsoring long runs.
