Titans Earn USTFCCCA Team All-Academic Honor
by RunMichigan Staff, Jul. 21, 2009
The University of Detroit Mercy men's and women's track and field program were both honored for their academic and athletic achievements during the 2008-09 campaign as both programs were named All-Academic Indoor and Outdoor Scholar Teams of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCA).
It is the seventh-straight year that the women have received the accolade making the mark this season after posting a 3.250 team GPA. In all, only 130 teams from Division I met the criteria for All-Academic status, including just three from the Horizon League with Butler and Loyola also on the list. The men were named for the sixth time in the last seven years after recording a 3.140 team GPA. The Titan were just one of 67 Division I programs, including three from the Horizon League with Butler and Loyola, to receive the annual academic distinction.
UDM also topped the list among the six men's programs from the state of Michigan. The selection of the All-Academic Indoor and Outdoor Scholar Teams of the Year award is based on a combination of academic and athletic achievements, with the top honor going to the team that had the combination of best overall finish at the Division I Indoor and/or Outdoor National Championships and cumulative GPA. To be nominated, the team must carry a minimum 3.000 team cumulative grade-point average.
