Seven UDM Student-Athletes Earn Academic All-League Honors

Seven University of Detroit Mercy student-athletes from the men’s and women’s track and field teams were honored today by the Horizon League as the conference announced its 2009 Winter Academic All-League teams on Wednesday. A total of 76 student-athletes from the six winter sports (men’s and women’s basketball, swimming and diving and indoor track and field) were honored in balloting by the League’s faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors from among more than 155 nominations. The men’s track and field program placed four student-athletes on the team, while the women earned three. The men’s honorees were led by senior Eric Christy (St. Clair, MI/St. Clair), who owns a 3.667 cume GPA in business. Both junior Alex Gould (Comstock Park, MI/Comstock Park) (3.664) and sophomore Kevin Smalley (Gladwin, MI/Gladwin) (3.920) had impressive GPA’s in bio-chemistry, while sophomore Pat Liederbach (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) holds a 3.407 GPA in education. On the women’s side, senior Jennifer DeFauw (Harper Woods, MI/Grosse Pointe North) carries a 3.906 in mathematics, while senior Danielle Poulin (Sterling Heights, MI/Warren Cousino) owns a 3.789 in criminal justice. Ashley Schinske (Paw Paw, MI/Paw Paw) rounds out the Titans\' academic selections with a 3.808 GPA in nursing. The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.
