Div III Michigan College Breakdown

Div III – Men

Calvin College once again dominated the Michigan Div III scene. In fact, no other Michigan Div III college was ranked nationally or regionally the entire season. Only Hope College was able to manage a preseason 9th place regional ranking. Calvin was ranked #1 in the region the entire season. In addition, Calvin was the top ranked team nationally heading into the NCAA meet.

Regional Meet Team Placing (Michigan Teams):
1st Calvin
15th Albion

Host Calvin College easily separated themselves from the rest of the field by finishing 87 points ahead of the 2nd place ONU team. Calvin scored only 27 points. No one else, other than Calvin qualified to the NCAA meet.

The NCAA meet didn’t go as expected for Calvin. Entering as the top seed, they ended up leaving as the 4th place team, 86 points out of first. Calvin was upended by NYU, Haverford, and Cortland State.

2008 Outlook For Div III Michigan XC Teams:

Calvin will be losing 3 of their top 7 to graduation but they are clearly one of the deepest teams in the country. Look for them to fill those 3 spots with fully capable athletes and to be another top 5 threat.

As for the rest of the Michigan Div III schools, look for Albion to move up in the region as they have several young runners on their roster.
Div III – Women Like the men’s team, Calvin’s ladies were also the top ranked team in the region the entire year. Heading into the NCAA meet, Calvin was the 2nd ranked team. There was no other Michigan Div III school ranked in the nation, let alone the region the entire year season.

Regional Meet (Michigan Teams):

1st Calvin
11th Hope
13th Albion
21st Kalamazoo
30th Alma
Did Not Place – Adrian – only finished 4 runners
Did Not Place – Olivet – only finished 2 runners

Like the men’s team, only the Calvin girls moved on to represent the Great Lakes Region at the NCAA Championship.

As mentioned previously, Calvin was the 2nd ranked team heading into NCAA’s. Calvin ended up leaving in the same spot as their men’s team – 4th place. Only finishing 79 points back from first, the Calvin team had a solid national meet. Regional Rankings:

Calvin Top 50 Finishers

37 Christina Overbeck Calvin 22:19
49 Jessica Koster Calvin 22:30 2008 Outlook For Michigan XC Teams:

With only 2 seniors on the entire Calvin women’s team, look for them to continue to dominate the Div III Michigan scene. In addition, look for Calvin to make another top 5 placing at nationals. They certainly have as much chance to win the whole thing as anyone else.

Look for Hope College to improve greatly and be more of a force at regionals. They only have 2 seniors in their top 7, to go along with 4 freshmen and 1 sophomore.

Albion will have a tough time improving over this year as they graduate 4 of their top 7. Though you never know how they will reload or who will step up.
