Bruce Waha 1926 - 2018

Ed Kozlov passed along some sad news last week. Long-time track and cross country coach Bruce Waha died on Wednesday, June 6, at the age of 91. He coached at Detroit Redford High School before moving on to Howell High School. Later he coached at Michigan State University for twelve years.

In his 54-year coaching career, Waha posted an overall record of 404-15 in track and field and 397-17 in cross country. At Redford, his teams won 14 track and cross country championships, a record. In his five years at Howell, his teams were conference champions each year.

In 1978, he won the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association prestigious Kermit Ambrose Award in recognition of outstanding service to track and his school and community. He was also a member of the MITCA Hall of Fame. The Michigan High School Coaches Association inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 2006.

Kozlov remembered, “He reached so many people, not only in the area, but the state as well.” Funeral arrangements are pending at www.gaylordfuneralhome.com.
