COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Redshirt senior Gina Sereno earned Second-Team All-America honors at 3,000 meters to close out the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships for the University of Michigan women's track and field team on Saturday (March 10).
Sereno ran to second-team honors for the second straight season at this distance as she took 15th in the final to close out both her season and indoor career. She now owns three indoor All-America honors, with first- and second-team awards from a year ago.
Adversity presented itself multiple times to Sereno in the early going of the race on her way to a time of 9:39.81. Just three laps into the race, she got mixed up with NCAA cross country champion Ednah Kurgat of New Mexico as both women went to the track coming off the turn onto the backstretch. Both women were able to regroup and reattach themselves to the pack.
Moments later, Sereno had to swerve into the outside lanes as she climbed the bank on the opposite side of that same curve to avoid an incident between three Stanford runners and Kurgat that resulted in a Cardinal on the track.
Sereno held on to the main pack for several more laps before the lead group pulled away.
With the indoor season now officially in the books, the Wolverines will turn their focus to the outdoor season. Much of the Wolverines' full squad, with the exclusion of those who competed in College Station this weekend, will be in action next Friday and Saturday at the Miami (Fla.) Hurricane Invitational.
