Calvin Women's Track and Field Takes Fourth at MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships

ANGOLA, Ind. - The Calvin women's indoor track and field team took fourth at the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with a team score of 115 points.
After winning the last two MIAA indoor titles, Calvin made a bid for a three-peat but finished just 16.5 points out of first place.
Hope won the meet with 131.5 points with Trine right behind in second with 130 points while Albion was third with 128.5 points.
Hit by injuries and illness heading into the meet, Calvin competed bravely and led for the first half of the meet before falling back just out of contention late in the meet.
The Knights won four individual events led by double-winners Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Ingelmoor HS) and Erin Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS).
A junior, Diekema came up with an impressive double, winning the mile run (5:05.03) and 3,000 meters (10:19.16). A junior, Van Lenten also had an impressive double, winning the 60 meter hurdles with a career-best time of 9.37 and also winning the triple jump with a season-best leap of 35-6. Van Lenten also took third in the long jump with a leap of 17-6.
Senior Anita VanderMeulen (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Skyline HS) was fifth in the long jump (16-7).
Calvin's distance medley relay team of senior Hattie Greydanus (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis HS), senior Maggie LaLonde (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS), sophomore Sarah Ball (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) and sophomore Emma Schroer (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton Warrenville South HS) was second (13:03.57).
In the 5,000 meter run, sophomore Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was fourth (18:02.57), junior Breanna Kooiman (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) was seventh (18:53.87). Koetje added a fifth place finish in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:44.02.
Ball also placed fifth in the mile run with a time of 5:26.53. Greydanus was sixth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:26.57.
Calvin had three individuals score in the high jump with senior Kayla Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) and sister Erin Van Lenten tying for second with jumps of 4-9. Sophomore Annika Staal (Woodinville, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS) also jumped 4-9 but took fourth having accumulated more attempts to clear the bar to finish fourth.
The Van Lenten sisters continued to pile up points in the pole vault. Kayla Van Lenten was third in the event with a vault of 9-7. Freshman sister Brooke Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) also went 9-7 but took fourth, having accumulated more attempts to clear the bar. Junior Annalane Miller (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) was sixth in the pole vault with a vault of 9-4.
Sophomore Allison Rozell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) was seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 33-9.
Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of junior Alyssa Wolters (Vincennes, Ind./South Knox HS), sophomore Margaret VanWylen (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS), Greydanus and LaLonde was fifth with a time of 4:21.15.
"We were a little short-handed today because of some injuries and some illness," said Calvin head track and field coach Bret Otte. "Having said that, I was very proud of the way our team competed. We had some outstanding performances and came out with our heads high. We knew that it would be a four-team race for the top spot. We just came up a little short. We will refocus and look forward to the outdoor season."
Saturday's MIAA Championships were held at Trine University. It marked the third MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships competition as the sport was introduced into the MIAA in 2016.
