Calvin - Men’s Track & Field Takes Third at G.R. Sports Hall of Fame Classic

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's track & field team recorded a third-place finish at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic at Aquinas College on Friday. In a field with NCAA Division II and NAIA schools, Calvin placed third with 136 points. Aquinas won with 166 points.
"I thought there were some great results all across the board," said head coach Bret Otte. "I was really impressed with the team tonight. It was great to have Mark DeJong back and running well in the mile. Jonathan Ellis, Jim VanDyke and Charlie Kornoelje ran well in the 5K."
Sophomore Christopher Visser (Fremont, Mich./Western Michigan Christian) was the fastest Knight in the 60-meter dash at 8.18.
Senior Ethan Valentine (Mason, Ohio/William Mason) was victorious in the 400-meter dash on Friday at 50.09. He placed third in the 200-meter dash at 23.07.
Sophomore Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) earned the victory in the 3000-meter run, edging out Foley Gannon of Aquinas with a time of 8:44.03.
Senior Noah Buteyn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) led a pack of Knights in the 800-meter run with a third-place finish at 1:59.18.
In the 1000-meter run, freshman Noah Cummisford (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) finished in third place at 2:40.74.
Senior Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) smoked the competition in the 1-mile run with a winning time of 4:23.42, almost nine seconds fastest than the second-place runner.
Freshman Jonathan Ellis (Baltimore, Md./Towson) finished the 5000-meter run in second place at 15:21.75.
Calvin sent five runners into the 60-meter hurdles final; senior Chase Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington) led the way in third place at 8.89.
Junior Lee Barents (Redlands, Calif./Arrowhead Christian) led the way for Calvin in the long jump, placing third with a leap of 21-7 ¼ feet. He also placed second in the triple jump at 41-1 1.2 feet.
Senior Jacob Stout (Escondido, Calif./Escondido Calvin Christian) recorded a third-place finish at the pole vault at 14 feet, 1.25 inches.
In the cage, junior Brendan VanHouten (Comstock Park, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) led Calvin with a fifth-place finish in the shot put at 43 feet, 2.25 inches and a fourth-place finish in the weight throw at 50 feet, eight inches.
The Knights return to action on Thursday at the GVSU Big Meet.
